Lee Jung-jae as Seong Gi-hun in the final season of Squid GameWarning: This article contains absolutely massive spoilers for the final season of Squid Game.Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk has opened up about how he came up with the idea for the show’s dramatic ending. Now, before we go any further, we are about to disclose what that dramatic ending entails, so if you’re trying to avoid spoilers, we’d highly recommend bookmarking this page and coming back once you’ve actually watched it.Don’t say we didn’t warn you, OK?So, those of us who’ve actually made it to the end of Squid Game will know that the third and final season concludes with the sinister games being brought to an end in Korea, although our hero Gi-hun doesn’t make it out alive.Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter about whether killing off Gi-hun was always his intention, Dong-hyuk admitted: “I don’t know if I can call it an original ending, but in the beginning I had a vague idea about how I would end the story. And back then, it was having Gi-hun end the game, in one way or another, and leave alive and go see his daughter in America.”Hwang Dong-hyuk created, directed and wrote all three seasons of Squid GameReferring to Cate Blanchett’s unexpected cameo, he continued: “Originally, I thought the person who witnesses the American recruiter woman would be Gi-hun.“But as I began writing the story, and as I began to think more and more about, ‘What do I want to deliver with the ending of this story?’ and also, ‘What should Gi-hun’s journey and what should his destination be?’, I was witnessing more and more what was happening around the world and I thought it was more fitting for Gi-hun to send this powerful and impactful message to the world and that should be how the story comes to a close.”Dong-hyuk then lamented: “The world seems to be headed for the worst. It seems to be becoming, in so many different ways, so much worse ahead. I thought, ‘What kind of sacrifices do we need to make in the current generation for us to be able to leave the future generation with a better world?’. So I wanted Gi-hun’s sacrifice to be a symbol of that.”With the hit Netflix drama now over, Dong-hyuk has made it clear that he considers the current Squid Game story to be over, although he is considering ideas for different spin-offs.A US remake with David Fincher at the helm is also widely reported to be in the works, while a new season of Squid Game: The Challenge, Netflix’s big-budget competition series, is also coming later this year.Squid Game is available to stream in full on Netflix.READ MORE:There’s Good News And Bad News For Anyone Still Hoping For Squid Game Season 4Squid Game Director Reveals Truth Behind That Truly Wild Season 3 Finale CameoSquid Game Fans Spot Sneaky Final Season Easter Egg And They're Stunned
