This Bird Feeding Mistake Is Keeping Robins Away From Your Garden

A robinThis week’s the first time it’s felt properly autumnal – the air is suddenly crisp and cold, and the wind and rain are picking up too. This cooling doesn’t just affect us, of course. Birds need to bulk up for winter, when food will be scarce. So, if you can, consider feeding them. A standard hanging seed bird feeder will help to bring more tits and finches to your garden. If you want to attract robins, too, however, you’ll need a different setup than you might think, the Woodland Trust shared. How can I attract robins to my garden?Unlike other species (like finches), robins usually eat food found on the ground. That usually involves insects and worms. So, Woodland Trust explained, “feeding trays are ideal” for the species. You can buy these with cages to prevent other critters from getting to the feed, or make your own with an unused hanging basket and a saucer. If you don’t want to use those, try using a bird table rather than a hanging feeder alone. After all, “robins are not likely to visit a hanging feeder unless there is a platform next to it,” the Woodland Trust said. The birds love high-energy foods like suet, sunflower hearts, and (their favourite) mealworms. They do love fat balls, but don’t hang them for robins to eat. Instead, crumble them onto a bird table or a feeding tray on the ground.Keep your bird feeders cleanWhether it’s a hanging feeder or a bird table, it’s important to keep your feeders clean to prevent disease from spreading among birds. That can involve sweeping off any older food from your table and cleaning all your feeders with soapy water once a week. Try to keep your bird feed covered so it doesn’t get wet. Mould and bacteria thrive in damp environments, so it’s important to remove soggy food as soon as possible.Related...How Birds Can Help Your Mental Health (You Won't Even Have To Leave The House)These Are The Major Trends Influencing Baby Names In 2025So THAT's Why Birds Sing Louder In The Morning
