Top Putin Ally Scorns Trump's 'Clumsy' Peace Talks With Ukraine And European Leaders

Russia's Foreign Affairs Minister Sergei Lavrov poured cold water on any European-led plans to end the Ukraine war.Russia’s most senior diplomat has just hit out at international efforts to resolve the Ukraine war without Moscow’s involvement, describing such talks as “clumsy”.Russia’s foreign minister Sergei Lavrov attacked the seven European leaders who travelled to the White House with Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelenskyy to talk through ending Vladimir Putin’s brutal invasion. The meeting was called to discuss Donald Trump’s face-to-face with Putin on Friday in Alaska and future security guarantees for Ukraine in the event of a peace deal.It concluded with the US president insisting the next step must be a bilateral meeting between Zelenskyy and Putin, followed by a trilateral which he would sit in on – although the Russian president is yet to agree to meet his Ukrainian counterpart.Despite these obvious facts, Lavrov could not help raging over the West’s attempts to end the war without Putin on Wednesday. He said: “I am sure that in the West and above all in the United States they understand perfectly well that seriously discussing security issues without the Russian Federation is a utopia, it’s a road to nowhere.”He said while Russia was in favour of “truly reliable” security guarantees for Kyiv, they would prefer it if those guarantees were based on a draft 2022 accord which gave Russia effective veto power over any military response. He said: “We cannot agree with the fact that now it is proposed to resolve questions of security, collective security, without the Russian Federation. This will not work.”This is just the latest attempt from the Kremlin to derail any potential peace talks.Putin is still making progress on the frontline in Ukraine and gradually taking more land and so believes he is winning.Even Trump has admitted that “it’s possible that he [Putin] doesn’t want to make a deal” – despite also being caught saying the exact opposite on a hot mic moment on Monday.Meanwhile, Dmitry Polyanskiy, a Russian deputy representative to the UN, told the BBC that “nobody rejected” the opportunity for direct talks, but claimed “it shouldn’t be a meeting for the sake of a meeting”.Related...Former Russian Prime Minister Neatly Sums Up How Keen Putin Is For Peace In UkraineAfter Days Of High-Powered Talks On Ending The Ukraine War, What Happens Next?British Voters Have Delivered A Damning Verdict On Donald Trump's Ability To End Ukraine War
