Top Putin Ally Goads Starmer's Coalition Of The Willing With Trump Claim

President Donald Trump meets with Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in the Oval Office at the White House, Monday, Aug. 18, 2025, in Washington.One of Vladimir Putin’s top allies taunted Ukraine’s Western allies this morning by claiming they were “outplayed” by Donald Trump.The US president hosted his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelenskyy in the White House yesterday as part of his latest bid to end Russia’s war in Ukraine.Other key leaders from Europe including the UK’s Keir Starmer, France’s Emmanuel Macron, Italy’s Giorgia Meloni, Germany’s Friedrich Merz, Finland’s president Alexander Stubb, Nato’s secretary general Mark Rutte and the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen were also in attendance.Meeting days after Trump failed to secure a ceasefire in his Alaska meeting with Putin, there were fears that the US would use this subsequent discussion to force Kyiv to cede land just to reach a peace deal with Russia.Trump has indeed given up his plan to secure a temporary truce on the battlefield, which is a concession to Putin.However, Ukraine’s allies rallied around Zelenskyy in the States on Monday, and Trump even ended up offering to give “security guarantees” to Ukraine.A bilateral meeting between Putin and Zelenskyy is also potentially on the cards now, which could be followed by a subsequent trilateral with Trump.As Starmer told the press: “They’re positive outcomes, there was a real sense of unity. We’ve made real progress today.”Of course, that’s not how the Kremlin saw it.Writing on X, Dmitry Medvedev, former Russian president and now the deputy chair of Russia’s security council, said: “The anti-Russian warmongering Coalition of the Willing failed to outplaying @POTUS on his turf. “Europe thanked & sucked up to him.”He said the remaining question was “what tune” Zelenskyy – whom he called the “Kyiv clown” – would play “about guarantees & territories back home, once he’s put on his green military uniform again.”Trump told Putin in Alaska that the pressure is now on Zelenskyy to agree to concessions which the US president claimed could end the war.It was quite the U-turn compared to just last week, when Trump claimed Russia would have to face “very severe consequences” unless he agreed to stop the fighting in Ukraine.The US president also told Zelenskyy in the Oval Office: “I don’t think you’d need a ceasefire. if you look at the six deals that I settled this year, they were all at war – I didn’t do any ceasefires.”But Zelenskyy has so far refused to formally surrender any occupied territory to Russia, pointing out that to do so would be a breach of Ukraine’s constitution.Related...UK Says Putin 'Has Never Been Serious About Peace' After Russian Strikes Kill 10 In UkraineKeir Starmer Splits With Donald Trump On Whether Ukraine Should Be Allowed To Join NatoUK Reveals Deadly Reason Why Putin Wants Ukraine To Hand Over Unoccupied Land To End War
