Trump Says 1 Recent Change Could Push Putin To Finally Agree To Ukraine Peace Deal

President Donald Trump speaks with reporters as he signs executive orders and proclamations in the Oval Office of the White House, Monday, May 5, 2025, in Washington.Donald Trump has claimed that changes to the price of oil may push Vladimir Putin to finally agree to a peace deal to end the Ukraine war.Fossil fuels drive the Russian economy so oil’s decline in price since the start of the year could be causing concern in the Kremlin, according to the US president.“I think Russia – with the price of oil right now, oil has gone down – we are in a good position to settle, they want to settle. Ukraine wants to settle,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office.Moscow’s oil price in roubles has fallen to a two-year low, and is 40% below the Kremlin’s budgeted level – meaning tax rises in Russia might be on the horizon.Putin invaded Ukraine in February 2022 in what most of Kyiv’s allies believe was a land grab. Many countries responded with sanctions and by weaning themselves off Russia’s cheap energy exports.Only the Trump White House has expressed sympathy with Russia’s claims that it was pushed into military action in Ukraine by the expansion of Nato – and even alleged at times that it was Kyiv who started the war.During his presidential election campaign, Trump promised to end the war within 24 hours of his inauguration. While he’s missed that self-imposed deadline by around 15 weeks, the US president is still trying to broker a truce between Ukraine and Russia.“We’ve come a long way and it could be something will happen, but hopefully it will,” Trump said on Monday, according to Reuters news agency. But Trump’s top team has also threatened on multiple occasions to withdraw from the peace negotiations all together, frustrated by Putin’s bluster and delay. The Russian president seemed to appease the White House slightly when he unilaterally announced a three-day ceasefire from May 8 to mark Europe and Soviet Union’s victory over Nazi Germany in World War 2.Although Ukraine has dismissed this suggestion as “manipulation”, Trump appeared to support it earlier this week. The US president told reporters: “As you know, President Putin just announced a three-day ceasefire – which doesn’t sound like much but it’s a lot if you knew where we started from. This is a war that should [have] never happened.”Related...Trump's Team Hit Out At Putin's 3-Day Ceasefire And Threaten To Step Back From Peace TalksUkraine Says Putin Has Ulterior Motive For Three-Day Ceasefire CallPutin Speaks Out About North Korea's Role In Ukraine War For First Time
