Ukraine Has Found A Way To Disrupt 1 Of The Most Important Days In Putin's Calendar
Russian President Vladimir Putin, left, and Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu leave Red Square after the Victory Day military parade in Moscow, Russia, Thursday, May 9, 2024.Ukraine has caused a “collapse” within the Russian aviation industry just before Vladimir Putin is expected to welcome 29 world leaders. The president wanted Chinese President Xi Jinping and Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, among others, to see Russia’s Victory Day parade on May 9.Xi, Putin’s most powerful international ally, was expected to arrive on May 7 and remain in Moscow until May 10 – but it now looks like he might struggle to get to Russia at all.The pro-Kremlin Telegram channel Mash reported on May 6 that Ukrainian drones had caused a “collapse” within the transport system, with forced mass flight delays and airport diversions within the Moscow region.Passengers allegedly ended up being on planes for several hours, without food.Russia’s Federal Air Transport Agency also admitted there were delays across the country, “due to the late arrival of aircraft at the initial airports of destination”.Meanwhile, Russia’s Defence Ministry said it downed two drones over Moscow on May 6.That was the third night in a row that Russia accused Ukraine of launching an overnight drone attack on its capital.Victory Day is a major propaganda tool for Russia, meant to mark the Soviet Union’s victory over Nazi Germany while also serving as a massive show of strength.Putin even unilaterally announced a three-day ceasefire in the Ukraine war so that Russia’s parade could go on without a hitch. However, Kyiv never agreed to that truce.Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy said it was Putin’s latest “manipulation” tactics and “a theatric performance” amid growing pressure for progress on the peace talks from the US.Zelenskyy warned on May 3 that Ukraine was not responsible for the safety of foreign officials travelling to see the Victory Day parade. It’s worth noting Russia has also continued with its attacks on Ukraine with strikes on Kharkiv, Sumy and Odesa.A Kremlin spokesperson said Russia would still go ahead with its ceasefire plans, but warned an “appropriate response will be given immediately” if Ukraine does not also halt fire.Related...'It's Modern Day Appeasement': Joe Biden Slams Donald Trump Over Ukraine WarTrump Says 1 Recent Change Could Push Putin To Finally Agree To Ukraine Peace DealRussia Heading for 1 Million Casualties In Ukraine War, UK Says
