Voters Urged To Avoid A 'Second Helping Of Farage' Nine Years After Brexit Vote
Britain voted to leave the EU nine years ago today.Voters have been urged to avoid “a second helping of Nigel Farage’s easy answers” on the ninth anniversary of the Brexit referendum.Despite mounting evidence of the huge economic damage that quitting the EU has done to the British economy, the Farage-led Reform UK are soaring ahead in the opinion polls.According to some estimates, leaving the European single market has cost the British economy £115 billion per year and the public purse more than £40 billion annually. The independent financial watchdog the Office for Budget Responsibility has also that the UK’s imports and exports will be 15% lower in the long-run than if Brexit had not happened.New polling from YouGov also showed the majority of British people would now vote to remain a member of the EU, with just three in 10 saying leaving the bloc was the right decision.Naomi Smith, chief executive of the pro-EU campaign group Best for Britain, told HuffPost UK: “The forces which brought us Brexit remain a clear and present danger in our politics.“Repeated polling shows the public overwhelmingly regret Brexit and want closer collaboration with our European neighbours and allies.“Voters deserve better than a second helping of Nigel Farage’s easy answers, which have only made Britain weaker and poorer.”Nick Harvey, chief executive of the European Movement think-tank, told HuffPost UK: “It’s long been clear that Brexit achieved none of its promises.”He said Britain’s EU departure was“a sustained and worsening blow to the UK economy”.“That has made us all poorer, depleted our economy and weakened our country with a thousand tiny cuts,” he said.“Far from settling the questions over Britain’s relationship with Europe, it’s left gaping holes and rampant uncertainty, creating instead a political landscape where Nigel Farage’s Reform party can flourish.”Dr Mike Galsworthy, chair of the European Movement UK, said: “Politicians must now face the facts – nine years since the vote, Brexit is still an ongoing accident, and its damage is far from over.”Related...Andrew Marr Slates 'Ludicrous, Offensive And Unpatriotic' Brexit Backlash To New EU DealGovernment Must Seize Unprecedented Chance To Halt Economic Decline Triggered By Brexit, MP Warns'It's A No-Brainer': Question Time Panellist Applauded For Her Solution To 'Absolutely Nuts' Brexit
