Former President Biden recently had surgery to remove skin cancer lesions from his forehead, his spokesperson confirmed Thursday.The big picture: Kelly Scully, the spokesperson, share a brief statement to outlets including Axios on Biden's treatment after images emerged of the 82-year-old leaving church in Delaware with what appeared to be a gash on his head over the Labor Day weekend.Biden's office announced in May that he was diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer.What they're saying: "Former President Biden recently had Mohs surgery," Scully said in the statement, without elaborating further.Scully did not immediately respond to Axios' Thursday evening request for more details on the surgery and the president's current condition.Zoom in: Mohs surgery is "the best method of removing skin cancer," according to a Skin Institute post.Patients who have a high risk of cancerous lesions returning after previous treatment in areas such as around the eyes, ears, nose, mouth, hands, feet and genitals, per a May Clinic post.How it works: The surgery "involves cutting away thin layers of skin," according to the Mayo Clinic."Each thin layer is looked at closely for signs of cancer. The process keeps going until there are no signs of cancer," per the clinic's post.
