Exclusive: House Freedom Caucus pushes for year-long stopgap funding

The House Freedom Caucus unanimously backed a year-long continuing resolution Tuesday, just as the Senate looks poised to move on a short-term measure to end the 35-day government shutdown. Why it matters: Leaders in both the House and Senate are pushing for a CR into next year, likely January. A year-long CR would be loathed by appropriators, who want a shorter measure to allow for passage of full-year spending bills A December CR is a nonstarter for the Freedom Caucus — and for GOP leadership."We believe a full-year Continuing Resolution will provide President Trump and Republicans the stability and leverage to continue our work to cut spending and rein in out-of -control woke, wasteful, and weaponized government," HFC members said in a statement first shared with Axios. The HFC supports a CR "as far into 2026 as possible (ideally, past the November 2026 election and with necessary defense stop-start anomalies)," according to the statement. State of play: A few conservatives have already closed the door to the Senate's deal, that would include a "mini-bus" to fund military construction, legislative affairs and agriculture.Asked whether he would support the Senate's product, Rep. Ralph Norman (R-S.C.) told Axios he "ABSOLUTELY WOULD NOT !!!" in a text Tuesday. Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas.), who has been pushing a year-long CR, told Axios he's not rejecting the Senate's product out of hand, but ultimately would like a year-long measure.
