Exclusive: Trump's letting Putin "embarrass" the U.S., Sen. Shaheen says
President Trump has let Russian President Vladimir Putin "embarrass" him and the entire U.S. by failing to respond as Russia crossed "seven red lines," Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.) said Monday at Axios House on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. Why it matters: Shaheen, the top Democrat on the Foreign Relations Committee, is one of several senators calling for more sanctions on Russia and more weapons for Ukraine. What she's saying: Referring to Russia's incursions into the airspace of several NATO allies, most recently Estonia, Shaheen told Axios' Mike Allen: "If we don't take strong action, who knows what the outcome of that could be?""We need to send a strong message to Vladimir Putin that he is done. He needs to end this conflict, he needs to end it now.""President Trump has allowed him to embarrass not only the president but the United States," she continued, noting that Trump "welcomed him with open arms in Alaska and got nothing for it.""Putin is not going to do anything unless he's pressured. He doesn't understand anything but strength, and the United States needs to show that," Shaheen said.State of play: Trump put tariffs on India for buying Russian oil, but has not taken further action despite repeated threats to punish Putin for refusing to make peace. Most recently, he suggested he would take action only after European allies took a number of steps to cut off Russia's oil revenues, including putting tariffs on China. What to watch: Trump continues to say he's disappointed in Putin, but Ukraine's backers on Capitol Hill and in Europe are frustrated that hasn't translated into more concrete action.
