Exclusive: FCC commissioner criticizes administration for "weaponizing" agency's authority

The Federal Communications Commission under the Trump administration is "weaponizing its licensing authority in order to bring broadcasters to heel," FCC commissioner Anna Gomez said Thursday at the Axios Media Trends Live event. Why it matters: Her comments come as FCC Chair Brendan Carr has been vocal in pressuring broadcasters with threats of investigations and warning of other actions. What they're saying: Gomez told Axios' Sara Fischer she sees the recent actions as "a part of this administration's campaign of censorship and control."She explained that it goes against the agency's mandate to censor broadcasters."So, any pressure on these broadcasters to alter their broadcast because of their content is in fact inappropriate," Gomez said. "And I think it's important to keep in mind the FCC doesn't have the authority the ability, or the constitutional right to revoke a license because of content like this."Catch up quick: Gomez, the lone Democratic commissioner at the FCC, has been critical of Carr's pursuit of the networks. On Wednesday, Carr warned ABC of potential repercussions for Jimmy Kimmel's comments in the wake of Charlie Kirk's killing. Gomez previously responded to the remarks, saying the Trump administration is "using the weight of government power to suppress lawful expression."Zoom in: When asked about Carr's actions, Gomez said the "threat is the point.""It is a very hard standard to meet to revoke a license, which is why it's so rare rarely done, but broadcast license to the broadcasters are extremely valuable," she explained."And so they don't want to be dragged before the FCC either in order to answer to an enforcement complaint of some kind or under the threat of possible revocation."This is a developing story.
