While there is high forecast confidence that Erin will...Posted by US National Weather Service Wakefield VA on Sunday, August 17, 2025Threat level: Hurricane Erin weakened from a Category 5 to a still-powerful Category 3 storm on Sunday, but it's expected to increase in size and strength again over the next 48 hours."Erin is forecast to remain a large and dangerous major hurricane through the middle of this week," the National Hurricane Center said in a Sunday evening advisory, as the storm moved west-northwest some 310 miles northwest of San Juan, Puerto Rico packing maximum sustained winds of 125 mph.Zoom in: A Tropical Storm Warning was in effect for the Turks and Caicos Islands and the Southeast Bahamas, while a coastal flood watch was issued for Dare County."Coastal flooding and ocean overwash are expected to begin as early as Tuesday ... and continue through Thursday," per a Dare County statement. "Portions of N.C. Highway 12 on Hatteras Island will likely be impassable for several days."Meanwhile, Erin was continuing to dump heavy rains across Puerto Rico on Sunday, after its outer bands first reached United States territory and U.S. Virgin Islands on Friday night.By the numbers: Cayey, Puerto Rico, has seen 6.28 inches of rain fall since Friday night and the U.S. Virgin Islands' St. John 7.32," per a post to X by the National Weather Service's San Juan offic."Additional rainfall of 2 to 4 inches are expected across Puerto Rico through Monday," according to the NHC. "Additional rainfall of 2 to 4 inches, with locally higher amounts to 6 inches, are forecast over the Turks and Caicos and the eastern Bahamas including San Salvador Island through Tuesday.
