Judge extends block on Trump's Harvard international student ban
A federal judge on Monday extended her block on the Trump administration's targeting of Harvard's international students, multiple outlets reported. Why it matters: International students are authorized to study in the U.S. until U.S. District Judge Allison Burroughs files a decision next week. Driving the news: As part of its battle with the Ivy League school, the Trump administration suspended the entry of international students seeking to attend Harvard.Burroughs previously temporarily blocked Trump's proclamation.State of play: The administration has attempted to limit Harvard's enrollment in multiple different ways. Harvard said in court filings that its students have their visas denied or revoked despite the restraining order. Students and Scholars who arrived in the U.S. were subjected to secondary screening at the airport. A State Department cable also ordered all U.S. embassies and consulates in late May to vet Harvard students and scholars' social media accounts for antisemitism. Refusal to provide social media accounts or setting the them in private mode "may be reflective of evasiveness," the cable says. Harvard's leadership has said Trump's actions are "illegal, retaliatory and politically motivated."By the numbers: Nearly 7,000 international students attended Harvard in the 2024-25 school year, comprising 27% of the student body. Several have asked the university about transferring out of it after the Trump administration's crusade began.
