Trump orders reopening of Alcatraz prison to house "most ruthless and violent Offenders"
President Trump said Sunday he's directed government departments to rebuild and reopen Alcatraz, the notorious California prison-turned tourist attraction. The big picture: Alcatraz was closed as a prison in 1963 because it was expensive to run and the U.S. government "found that it was more cost-effective to build a new institution" than to keep it open, per a Federal Bureau of Prisons post. The reopening of ALCATRAZ will serve as a symbol of Law, Order, and JUSTICE. We will, MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!"What they're saying: "The Bureau of Prisons will comply with all Presidential Orders," said FBOP spokesperson Randilee Giamusso in an emailed statement Sunday evening."When we get additional information we will be happy to provide it."Zoom out: The Trump administration has faced several standoffs with the courts over the deportation of undocumented immigrants.Representatives for the White House, DOJ, FBI and Homeland Security did not immediately respond to Axios' request for comment Sunday evening on how the administration plans to fund the rebuilding and reopening of Alcatraz, how much it expects it to cost and when do it plans to reopen it.Go deeper: Remembering the Indigenous occupation of Alcatraz
