Trump spoke with Zelensky ahead of deadline for Putin
President Trump spoke on Tuesday with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and discussed the ceasefire ultimatum Trump set for Russian President Vladimir Putin, according to Ukrainian officials. Why it matters: Trump's deadline to Putin will expire on Friday. If the Russian president doesn't agree to a ceasefire by then, the U.S. will impose new sanctions on Russia for the first time since Trump returned to office.Trump's call with Zelensky took place a day before White House envoy Steve Witkoff's expected trip to Moscow for a meeting with Putin. Behind the scenes: Trump told Zelensky that Witkoff's visit was coming at the Kremlin's request, more than three months since his last meeting with Putin, according to a Ukrainian official with knowledge of the call. What they are saying: Zelensky wrote on X that the call with Trump focused on ending the war."We coordinated our positions. We exchanged assessments of the situation. President Trump is fully informed about Russian strikes on Kyiv and other cities and communities," Zelensky wrote. He stressed that he discussed with Trump the potential sanctions against Russia. "Their economy continues to decline, and that's exactly why Moscow is so sensitive to this prospect and President Trump's resolve. This can change a lot," Zelensky wrote. What to watch: Zelensky noted that he discussed with Trump the U.S. weapons supply initiative, funded by NATO countries, and the draft agreement with the U.S. on drone production in Ukraine.
