AKA Charlie Sheen Reviews: Critics Have The Same Issue With The Netflix Documentary
Charlie Sheen as seen in his new Netflix documentaryCharlie Sheen, one of the most controversial pop culture figures of the 21st century, has been given the opportunity to tell his unbelievable story in his own words in a new Netflix documentary. On Wednesday morning, the two-part doc AKA Charlie Sheen began streaming, featuring extensive interviews with the former Two And A Half Men actor, as well as numerous friends, colleagues, former partners and even a few of his adversaries. At the beginning of the doc, the polarising actor declares that nothing is off-limits in AKA Charlie Sheen – but critics are already calling this into question. While the show has been largely well-received, early reviews have said that certain subjects did not face enough questioning or scrutiny.Variety described AKA Charlie Sheen as an “odd, frustrating, occasionally intriguing project”, claiming it “pads out scarce but real nuggets of insight with leading questions and endless clips”.The same review suggested that while it “purports to go beyond Sheen’s worst, most publicised moments”, it, in fact, “mostly reveals how much the actor continues to live in their shadow”.Similarly, The Hollywood Reporter claimed that Sheen comes across as “introspective and regretful in the moments he isn’t burnishing the legend of his various appetites, almost to the point that nothing feels spontaneous, putting the ‘canned’ in ‘candor’”.The Independent went as far as giving AKA Charlie Sheen four stars out of five, but described its storytelling as “descriptive” and lamented that “allegations such as the discharge of a firearm that injured ex-girlfriend Kelly Preston, or [Sheen’s ex-wife Denise Richards’] insinuations about his preference for young-looking men and women, are breezed over”.Meanwhile, The Guardian was clearly less impressed, awarding the project just two stars and claiming that “signs of true contrition, remorse or understanding of the suffering he must have put so many others through are increasingly conspicuous by their absence”.“There is too little self-examination on Sheen’s part here – and too many wistfully happy smiles as he remembers his partying days – for us to feel any sorrier for him than we do for those around him,” the review continued. An official Netflix synopsis for the show teases: “With seven hard-fought years of sobriety behind him, Charlie Sheen – as you’ve never seen him – finally leaves it all on the table, and revisits the very public peaks and valleys of his life with humour, heart and jaw-dropping candour.”AKA Charlie Sheen is now streaming on Netflix.MORE NETFLIX:These Are Our 11 Top Picks Of The New Shows And Films To Stream On Netflix In September 2025'I'd Vote For Her': Suranne Jones Lifts The Lid On Her Prime Minister Character In Netflix's HostageThought The Stars Of The Thursday Murder Club Looked Familiar?
