Alicia Vikander Reveals How She Really Feels About The Danish Girl 10 Years Later
Alicia VikanderAlicia Vikander has conceded that her film The Danish Girl now feels “extremely dated” a decade on from its original release. The Swedish star won an Oscar for her supporting role in the historical drama, which told the story of Lili Elbe, who was one of the first trans women in history to undergo gender-affirming surgery.During a recent interview with British Vogue, Alicia said that around the release of The Danish Girl in 2015, the film felt like “a pivot” in that meant issues relating to the lives of transgender people were being “at least discussed”.“I hope that in a way it was a bit of an eye-opener and opened the way for art to cover those themes,” she claimed. However, Alicia also said that because of the decision to have Lili portrayed by Eddie Redmayne, a cisgender man, she is “the first one to say it already feels extremely dated”, noting that this was “a good thing” as it meant progress had been made for trans people and the way they are portrayed in the media in the last 10 years.Alicia Vikander and Eddie Redmayne in 2015's The Danish GirlEddie’s casting as Lili Elbe was always a polarising issue, and in 2021, he described accepting the role as a “mistake”.“I wouldn’t take it on now,” he told The Times. “I made that film with the best intentions, but I think it was a mistake.”“The bigger discussion about the frustrations around casting is because many people don’t have a chair at the table,” the Fantastic Beasts actor continued. “There must be a levelling, otherwise we are going to carry on having these debates.”After the film’s release, Eddie was nominated for a Golden Globe, Bafta and Oscar for his performance as Lili, while Alicia won the Academy Award for her performance as Gerda Wegener.Read Alicia Vikander’s full interview in the September issue of British Vogue.View this post on InstagramA post shared by British Vogue (@britishvogue)MORE FILM NEWS:Harry Potter Director Has A Very Blunt 3-Word Message Ahead Of New TV AdaptationJude Law Is Unrecognisable As He Transforms Into Vladimir Putin For New Film RoleCritics Are Saying The Same Thing About Netflix's Adaptation Of The Thursday Murder Club
