'My Heart Is Just Breaking': Ukraine Mourns After Russia's Deadly Kyiv Strike Kills 15 People

A Ukrainian MP has said her heart is “breaking” after Russia launched a deadly overnight attack on the capital of Kyiv.At least 15 people were killed by the strikes carried out on Wednesday night, including four children.The British Council and the EU delegation offices in Kyiv were also hit.Ukrainian MP Kira Rudik told Sky News that the country is facing constant “armageddon”.She said: “We are very very scared and devastated, but I want to stress this is just a regular response by Russia to all the attempts to bring peace.“That is their response to the attempts of European leaders to put some sanctions on them.“This is their response to the attempts from President Trump to impose sanctions or bring them to the table for negotiation.“This is armageddon that we are under.“Almost every day and night, it is something that has not stopped.”She said the public should not believe any words coming from the Kremlin, and said they do not want peace. Rudik claimed that it was not a coincidence the offices of the British Council and the EU delegations were hit, pointing out that a factory funded by US investment was also struck by Russian missiles recently.She said it’s all an attempt to “create a distraction and cause pain in Ukraine”.She said Ukrainians are still hopeful that US president Donald Trump will be able to apply pressure on Russia to stop the war – but that words alone are not enough.“There needs to be severe actions or consequences for them, for what they are doing,” she said. “How many people that on Ukraine’s independence day were thanking president Trump for his attempts to bring peace – how many of them were killed this night in Kyiv? The US president has been trying to force Putin to the negotiating table with Ukraine to put an end to the war – but he’s not made any significant headway so far.Ukraine wants to make sure western-backed security guarantees are in any future deal, and Putin wants Kyiv to give up the whole of its Donbas region.Kyiv has completely rejected that idea, while Putin has refused to accept the concept of installing European peacekeeping troops in Ukraine.EU defence ministers are set to meet in Copenhagen today to discuss upping the pressure on Putin, and many are reeling from the overnight violence.Ukraine’s foreign minister Andrii Sybiha said Russia had “targeted diplomats – in direct breach of the Vienna Convention” by targeting EU and UK offices, while the EU’s foreign affairs chief Kajas Kallas said it was a “deliberate choice to escalate and mock” peace efforts.French president Emmanuel Macron said the attacks amounted to “terror” and “barbarism”.The Russian envoy in Brussels has reportedly been summoned.According to Sky News, the UK also intends to summon the Russian ambassador after the British Council building was hit in the latest strikes.Prime minister Keir Starmer described the attacks as “senseless”, adding: “Putin is killing children and civilians, and sabotaging hopes of peace.
