All's Fair Director Has His Say On Scathing Reviews The Legal Drama Has Received
Naomi Watts, Niecy Nash-Betts, Glenn Close and Kim Kardashian in All's FairA director on All’s Fair has had his say on the scathing reviews the show has received since its premiere earlier this week.Ryan Murphy’s new legal drama debuted on Disney+ on Tuesday, featuring a cast that includes Kim Kardashian an Emmy winners Niecy Nash-Betts and Sarah Paulson, as well as Oscar nominees Naomi Watts and Glenn Close. However, despite the prestige of many of its stars, the show has been unanimously slammed by critics, receiving a rare 0% score on Rotten Tomatoes, with many outlets giving it zero-star reviews.Asked about the criticism by The Hollywood Reporter, Anthony Hemingway – who helmed two of the three episodes currently streaming – insisted: “You’re not going to please everybody. You may have certain criticisms, while there are a million others who love it.”He continued: “I think the show holds a mirror up to each person who watches it. It’s just about: Can you connect to it or relate to it, and see yourself? It may be out of your league, it may not be anything you can connect to, and I think that goes for anything that gets presented on screen.“It’s entertainment, it’s a comedy, and it’s a matter of finding ways to tap into real conversations and real human dynamics in a different way. Every time you meet any sort of difference, it takes a minute to either develop a taste for it or not. It may not be for you, and that’s OK, but I personally enjoy the show. I had a lot of fun relating to it in my own way.“Not everything is for everybody, and you can’t also expect one person to define something and for that be the totality of what it is — I don’t agree with that.”Anthony went on to say that sometimes a show “may take time” to win people over, pointing out that at first, “no one liked” The Wire, “but it got to  appoint where it found a moment”.“I’m not comparing the show to The Wire — let’s get that straight,” he quickly clarified. “But it’s an example of how people can react to something in one moment and it becomes something totally different in another time.“The show takes a minute to get into gear, but I do feel like it is absolutely striking something that is refreshing and creatively fulfilling.”As you might expect, Sarah Paulson's performance is one of All's Fair's few redeeming qualitiesHe also suggested that people’s expectations of All’s Fair as a “legal drama” are not necessarily what the show was setting out to do.Anthony explained: “There’s a lot of wish fulfillment in this show that was by design, and it’s coming at a time where people want an escape and to fantasise. There are elements of this show that effectively do that, where it’s not taking itself so serious. It wouldn’t be a comedy if it was trying to be that.“Everything is so dark and heavy and decisive, and here you have this show that can connect to real conversations, but with a different palette. It’s a way to connect to the human condition and certain aspects of humanity. I think that it ultimately delivers.”While reviews for All’s Fair have been unequivocally negative, that certainly hasn’t deterred people from watching it and, at the time of writing, it stands as the number one show on Disney+ right now.READ MORE:Those Scathing Reviews For Kim Kardashian's New Legal Drama Haven't Stopped People Streaming ItThe White Lotus Is Having A Major Shake Up For Season 4 – And We Can't WaitHouse Of Guinness Star Anthony Boyle Answers 1 Big Question About His Nude Scene
