All's Fair Reviews: Kim Kardashian's New Legal Drama Is Torn Apart By Critics
The cast of All's FairRyan Murphy’s new legal drama All’s Fair began streaming on Tuesday – and it’s had what we can only describe as the worst reviews of the year so far.The star-studded series had its premieres on both sides of the Atlantic last month, although reviews for the show were embargoed until the day it debuted on Disney+.Having now read them, it’s not hard to see why. While All’s Fair boasts an incredible cast that includes Sarah Paulson, Glenn Close, Naomi Watts and Emmy winner Niecy Nash-Betts – with Kim Kardashian, who previously collaborated with Ryan Murphy on American Horror Story, at the centre of it all – the show has been ripped apart by critics for everything from its writing to its acting performances. In fact, it now holds the unenviable distinction of a 0% score on Rotten Tomatoes, with some critics giving it zero stars out of five in their reviews.Kim Kardashian and Naomi Watts play divorce lawyers in All's FairNow, before we get into what critics are actually saying, let us just say this. We had a sneak peek at All’s Fair ahead of time, and if all of these scathing reviews are making you curious to watch it for yourself, we can’t deter you strongly enough from avoiding it.The glossy sheen of the show and its stacked cast might make you think it’s verging on “so bad it’s good” territory, but it’s really just a boring dud. Find literally anything else to do with your time – clean out the fridge, clear out your work inbox, watch paint dry… it’s all a better option than All’s Fair, trust us (although, as ever, Sarah Paulson is innocent). With that in mind, here’s a selection of what’s been said so far…The Guardian (0/5) “Fascinatingly, existentially terrible [...] If this was all part of a lurid, camp drama played with gusto by all and narratively stuffed with treats, Murphy might have got away with it. But no one seems to know what they’re doing; the performances seem to respond to about nine different ideas of what the show is and the plots are dismal.”Naomi Watts, Niecy Nash-Betts, Glenn Close and Kim Kardashian in All's FairThe Times (0/5)“[This] may well be the worst television drama ever made. Because All’s Fair is so bad, it’s not even enjoyably so. It thinks it’s a feminist fable about spirited lawyers getting their own back on cruel rich men but is in fact a tacky and revolting monument to the same greed, vanity and avarice it supposedly targets. All scripted, it feels, by a toddler who couldn’t write ‘bum’ on a wall.”The Hollywood Reporter“All’s Fair arrives under a female-empowerment veneer that grows thinner every time the plot dangles kinky consensual sex or a trans sex worker as a lurid reveal.”Variety“All’s Fair is a clumsy, condescending take on rah-rah girlboss feminism, half-baked even by the standards of an overextended Murphy [...] the tone is intentionally camp-adjacent, and if one squints they could discern the vague outlines of a parody. But that’s little consolation when All’s Fair demonstrates such a low opinion of its own viewers, assuming we’ll bark like seals when fed disconnected scraps of sassy one-liners, flashy outfits and men-ain’t-shit commiseration.”As you might expect, Sarah Paulson's performance is one of All's Fair's few redeeming qualitiesThe Telegraph (1/5)“A crime against television [...] amid this disaster zone of soapy plotting and reeking dialogue, it is perhaps unfair to single out Kardashian. Her participation is just one disaster among many.”Glamour“Some of Murphy’s shows are often, by lore, all infused with a certain outrageous level of camp, fun and OTT – and we’re not expected to take it all that seriously. But in All’s Fair, what should be camp feels flat, and what is trying to be outrageous and fun actually feels hollow and empty.”USA Today (1/4) “The worst TV show of the year [...] lest you think that it is the kind of ‘bad’ that is messy and fun and ripe for hate-watching, I will disappoint you further: It’s so stilted, artificial and awkward not even a glass of wine and leftover Halloween candy can make it remotely enjoyable to view.”TheWrap“The end product is a glossy but shockingly slapdash production where some of the most charismatic actresses of our generation are left braying into the wind for a trite #girlboss fantasy that’s a decade too late.”Kim Kardashian's performance has been slammed by critics, although she's far from the worst thing about the show (nor does she give its worst performance)Consequence“The goal might have been camp. But camp’s supposed to be fun.”TV Line“It’s fun, flashy fluff, and if you’re looking to enjoy an hour of television with your brain turned all the way off (which is fine!), it might be worth giving the show a chance before making your own ruling.”The first three episodes of All’s Fair are streaming now on Disney+, with new instalments every Tuesday.MORE TV NEWS:Thought You Recognised The New Additions To Nobody Wants This Season 2?
