Bridget Phillipson Set To Face Lucy Powell In Fight To Become Labour Deputy Leader
Bridget Phillipson is set to go head-to-head with Lucy PowellBridget Phillipson is set to face Lucy Powell in the fight to become Labour deputy leader as the contest became a two horse race.Phillipson, the education secretary, has so far received the support of 116 MPs – easily clearing the 80 nominations she needed to get through to the next stage.Powell is just three short of the magic number on 77, and is expected to get the backing she needs in time for the deadline at 5pm tomorrow. They are both well ahead of their nearest rival, left-winger Bell Ribeiro-Addy, who has 15 nominations, followed by Paula Barker on 14 and Emily Thornberry on 13.No.10 had been hoping that a full-blown contest could be avoided amid fears that it will highlight the deep splits within the party and the discontent among MPs at the prime minister’s performance. An ally of Phillipson said: “Bridget has nominations from MPs representing every type of seat in every part of the country, north to south, Scotland, England and Wales, rural and urban, city and town, New Labour-won seats, and heartland seats.“The parliamentary Labour party is uniting behind Bridget. All her backers know that Bridget is the only candidate to unite the party, push our positive message out to the country and deliver the change we were elected to bring.”Powell is known to be “furious” that she was sacked as Commons leader in Keir Starmer’s cabinet reshuffle last Friday. She said: “Over the last year, as part of the Labour government I was proud to serve, I have championed our backbenchers, made sure their voices were heard, and sought to unite our team.“We must use all our talents and experience to ensure our Labour government, led by our prime minister, is successful in delivering our mandate of change.“This means responding to the huge challenges we face with bold policies, rooted in progressive Labour values.”Related...What Labour's Reshuffle Means For Women’s Representation In GovernmentBridget Phillipson Takes Early Lead In Six-Way Race To Be Labour Deputy LeaderLabour Splits Erupt As Andy Burnham Blasts Starmer's 'London-Centric' Reshuffle
