David Lammy Says Reform UK MP's 'Racist' Take On TV Ads 'Belong In The Dark Ages'
Nigel Farage looks on while David Lammy says a Reform UK MP's views on TV ads belong "in the dark ages"David Lammy claimed a Reform UK MP’s “racist” attack on the lack of white people on TV adverts “belongs in the dark ages” while attacking the right-wing party in prime minister’s questions. It comes after Reform MP Sarah Pochin sparked backlash for commenting on the race of people who appear in TV adverts less than two weeks ago.The deputy prime minister was standing in for Keir Starmer this week while the PM attends a major UN climate conference in Brazil when he lambasted Nigel Farage’s party.Labour MP Tristan Osborne set Lammy up beforehand by asking the senior minister to respond to Reform’s management of Kent County Council – several councillors have recently been suspended or expelled from the council, which recently came under Reform’s control.Lammy replied: “Reform said that Kent County Council would be the best advert for what a Reform government would look like.“They’re delivering on the chaos they promised and on standards in public life.”He then pivoted slightly, adding: “I used to replace the honourable gentleman [Farage] on LBC, so we’ve known each other for many years. “The disgraceful, racist language that we heard from a Reform MP last week belongs in the dark ages.”Farage, who had been smiling and laughing with colleagues throughout the rest of Lammy’s answer, suddenly looked somber by the time the deputy prime minister concluded.David Lammy has said comments by Reform UK's only female MP were "disgraceful, racist language... which belongs in the Dark Ages"https://t.co/G8gDzyqv3Q📺 Sky 501, Virgin 602, Freeview 233 and YouTube pic.twitter.com/Et48bQdxnU— Sky News (@SkyNews) November 5, 2025What did Sarah Pochin say about TV adverts? While responding to a caller’s question on Talk TV in late October, Pochin said: “It drives me mad when I see adverts full of black people, full of Asian people, you know people who are anything other than white.”The MP for Runcorn and Helsby later released a statement on X after significant backlash, saying her comments were “phrased poorly”, adding: “I unreservedly apologise for any offence caused.”But she still claimed: “British TV adverts have gone DEI [diversity, equity, inclusion] mad.”Despite calls to remove the party whip, Farage stood by his MP, telling reporters in a separate press conference that Pochin’s words were “ugly”.He said: “It was in the context of DEI madness madness in the advertising industry, which anybody with half a brain knows has been going on since 2021.“I understand the basic point but the way she put it was ugly.”He added: “If I thought the intention behind it was racist, I would have taken a lot more action that I have done today – and that is because I don’t.”Related...'Whose Side Do You Think He's On?'
