Donald Trump Insists Israel-Hamas Ceasefire Is Holding Despite Clear Evidence To The Contrary

Donald Trump has just insisted that “nothing” will get in the way of the ceasefire he brokered for the Israel-Hamas conflict – but his words are at odds with exactly what has just happened on the ground.At least 50 Palestinians were killed in a series of Israeli strikes on Gaza overnight, according to local hospitals and the Hamas-run Civil Defence agency.Civil infrastructure including schools and residential blocks were hit by Israeli attacks.The Civil Defence also warned the death toll may rise because of the missing people trapped under rubble.Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Tuesday that he had ordered his military to carry out “forceful strikes” in Gaza but did not say why.But Israel’s defence minister said Hamas had crossed a “bright red line” within the truce agreement and launched an attack in part of southern Gaza, killing an Israeli soldier.Hamas have also been accused of breaching the peace deal after the group handed over a coffin with human remains which did not belong to one of the 13 deceased hostages still in Gaza – a claim Hamas deny.Defence minister Israel Katz said: “Hamas will pay many times over for attacking the soldiers and for violating the agreement to return the fallen hostages.”The group said these are “baseless allegations” and accused Israel of “seeking to fabricate false pretexts in preparation for taking new aggressive steps”.The Palestinian militants said: “Hamas affirms that it has no connection to the shooting incident in Rafah and affirms its commitment to the ceasefire agreement.“The criminal bombardment carried out by the fascist occupation [Israeli] army on areas of the Gaza Strip represents a blatant violation of the ceasefire agreement.”Hamas’ military wing also said Israeli “violations” meant they would delay the return of a hostage’s body which it had recovered on Tuesday.Meanwhile, the International Committee of the Red Cross (IRC) has condemned Hamas for its “fake recovery” of a deceased Hamas hostage.All of this is a long way from when Trump declared “the war is over” two weeks ago, after the Israeli hostages were freed.Asked for his response to this latest surge in violence last night, the US president told reporters: “As I understand it, they took out, they killed an Israeli soldier.“So the Israelis hit back and they should hit back.”But he insisted “nothing is going to jeopardise” the ceasefire, adding: “You have to understand Hamas is a very small part of peace in the Middle East, and they have to behave.”Trump’s vice-president JD Vance also played down the new developments as “little skirmishes” and insisted the ceasefire was “holding”.UK prime minister Keir Starmer is yet to comment on the new developments, while Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey told LBC Israel’s actions were “deeply alarming and reckless.”Existing regional tensions escalated in October 2022 when Hamas killed 1,200 people on Israeli soil and took a further 251 people hostage.Israel declared war as a result, imposing an aid blockade and launching regular missile strikes.
