Ex-Harry Potter Director Shares 2-Word Response To JK Rowling Controversy After Ditching HBO Reboot
J. K. RowlingThough a new Harry Potter TV show is set to come out on HBO, director Chris Columbus ― who shot the first two Harry Potter movies starring Daniel Radcliffe, and produced the third ― will not be involved. Speaking to Variety recently to help promote the Thursday Murder Club’s Netflix debut, he said: “No, I’ve done it, you saw my version.“There’s nothing left for me to do in the world of Potter,” he added. The director also explained away the often-lamented loss of book character Peeves in the film, stating: “we just didn’t have time to develop the character”.And the director had a couple of words to say when asked about the author of the best-selling books, JK Rowling’s, controversies.Chris ColumbusRowling’s views on trans people have gotten lots of attention over the past few years, with the author recently misgendering a number of transgender public figures on purpose, and publicly celebrating the UK Supreme Court’s ruling that says, legally speaking, women are only those assigned female at birth. This, and more acts like it, have seen the writer receive backlash from ex-Harry Potter stars includingDaniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Stephen Fry (who narrated the books’ audio versions).Other celebrities and charities have also tried to hold the author accountable. For his part, Columbus described the controversy as “very sad”. JK Rowling“I like to sometimes separate the artist from the art, I think that’s important to do,” he told Variety.“It’s unfortunate, what’s happened. I certainly don’t agree with what she’s talking about. But it’s just sad, it’s very sad”. The director also spoke about his pride for Daniel Radcliffe, who has spoken out against Rowling’s views, after his recent Tony win, as well as complimenting co-stars Emma Watson and Rupert Grint.“We knew that the eyes of the world would be on these three kids and they thankfully had just wonderful parents who helped them deal with what I can’t even imagine the pressures are of suddenly your face being everywhere. So we were hoping that the kids would turn out as well as they did,” he said, adding: “There’s a sense of pride to see Daniel Radcliffe win a Tony Award”.Related...Pedro Pascal Reflects On JK Rowling 'Heinous Loser' CommentsStephen Fry Weighs In On JK Rowling Controversy As He Claims She's Been 'Radicalised'Nick Frost Addresses Controversy Over JK Rowling's Views After Joining Harry Potter TV Series
