(Mikhail Metzel, Sputnik, Kremlin Pool Photo via AP)A former Russian prime minister has said Vladimir Putin may be forced to agree a peace deal to end the war with Ukraine by the end of the year.Mikhail Kasyanov said Russia’s “contracting” economy meant the country’s president may have no option but to seek a settlement to stop the hostilities. His comments come as Donald Trump prepares to make a “major statement” on the conflict, which began with Russia’s invasion of its neighbour in 2022.The US president is preparing to send more weapons to help Ukraine defend itself after growing increasingly frustrated with Putin’s continuation of the war.Responding to Russian drones bombing a Ukrainian maternity hospital last week, the US president said: “You’ll be seeing things happening.”On Times Radio this morning, Kasyanov `- who was Russian PM from 2000 until 2004 – said Putin has a “manpower” problem. He said: “Putin has no people to work. All people just transfer from civilian industry to military industry. Civilian industry is already contracting, that’s a problem he has. By the end of the year, a completely different situation will appear.”Presenter Stig Abell asked him: “If Ukraine hangs on, if Ukraine doesn’t get overrun by Russia, you think by the end of the year Putin might have to sue for peace even, because he won’t be able to carry on doing what he’s doing?”Kasyanov, who served under Putin when he was PM, replied: “Exactly.”He said moves by US politicians to pass a law which would allow the president to impose sanctions on countries which buy Russian oil would also pile pressure on Putin to end the war.“You think, by the end of the year, Putin might have to sue for peace?”“Exactly.”Former Russian prime minister Mikhail Kasyanov tells Times Radio that Russia’s “contracting” civilian economy will force Putin into peace.@StigAbell | @KateEMcCann | #TimesRadiopic.twitter.com/IBBhNWw4hj— Times Radio (@TimesRadio) July 14, 2025Trump’s attitude towards Putin has undergone a dramatic shift since he re-entered the White House in January. When Putin first launched its offensive into Ukraine back in February 2022, Trump – who had been ousted from office the year before – called the ruthless land grab “savvy” and “genius”.But the tide appeared to change in spring this year after Moscow launched the deadliest strike on Ukraine since last summer. In a much-mocked moment, he wrote on social media: “Vladimir, STOP!”At the start of July, he spoke to Putin on the phone and said he was “disappointed” in the Russian leader and that he did not believe Moscow would end the war.And last week he said: “We get a lot of bullshit thrown at us by Putin, if you want to know the truth.”Related...Trump Just Called Out Putin's 'Bulls***' – But Don't Expect Anything To Change In UkraineTrump Accuses His Benefactor Putin Of Spewing ‘Bullshit’ About Ukraine InvasionKremlin Slams Trump Administration For Resuming Weapon Shipments To Ukraine
