WTF Is Aura Farming? Gen Alpha Slang Explained

WTF Is Aura Farming? Gen Alpha Slang Explained
What are the kids saying right now? If you’re a parent or caregiver, it’s time to get up to speed in time for the summer holidays. We’ve already covered off glazing and gurt,tuff and six-seven, as well as the meaning when teens call something “Ohio” (hint, it’s not necessarily positive).More recently, you might’ve seen there’s a viral video which the internet is a fair bit obsessed with – in it, an 11-year-old dances while perched at the very front of a canoe-like boat during a local boat race in Indonesia. The tween, Rayyan Arkan Dikha, has become known as the “aura farmer” thanks to his impressive moves (and epic balance) which have earned him global fame and have been copied by the likes of Travis Kelce and even the Paris Saint-Germain football team.@psgHis aura made it all the way to Paris 🇫🇷✨ #psg#indonesia#aurafarming♬ original sound - 𝖍𝖆𝖑𝖑𝖔𝖜In a recent interview with BBC Indonesia, the 11-year-old said: “I came up with the dance myself. It was just spontaneous. Every time my friends see me, they say, ‘You’re viral’.”In years gone by, some people might’ve called his moves badass or, quite simply, cool. But now it’s all about aura... So, what’s aura farming – and how does one go about it?In order to understand aura farming, we need to first look at the term “aura” which kids increasingly use to describe how cool or uncool something (usually a person) is.As school teacher and TikTok creator Philip Lindsay previously explained in a TikTok video: “You can gain aura by doing something cool. You can lose aura by doing something uncool.”So far, so straightforward.Or as one Redditor describes it: “It’s basically the same as badass or cool but in an objective form so that you can talk about it as a currency or something that a person has. It’s inherently influenced by video games.”As for the farming element, Mr Lindsay said that’s “intentionally doing something to try and convince people that you are special, or impressive, or you have a lot of aura”.In the case of Rayyan Arkan Dikha, his now-viral dance moves – replicated by sports stars and Formula 1 drivers alike – have earned him aura. But, a word of warning, there are times when aura farming can be seen as cringe. As The Guardian explains: “Where there is cool, there is also cringe. They are two sides of the same coin. And trying too hard to aura farm is not cool.“If someone from Gen Alpha or Z says you’re aura farming, pay attention to the tone. If it’s accusatory, they’re mocking you. If they’re laughing, they’re mocking you.”Oh joy.Related...WTF Does 'Crashing Out' Mean When Teens Say It?There Are 'Living Room Kids' And 'Bedroom Kids' – Which One's Yours?Kids Keep Saying 'Six-Seven' And Nobody Seems To Know What It Means
