MPs Under Growing Pressure To Pass Law Stripping Prince Andrew Of His Royal Titles
A selection of national newspapers showing the front pages and their reaction to Prince Andrew announcing that he will relinquish his Duke of York title and the Order of the Garter.MPs are under mounting pressure to bring forward a law to strip Prince Andrew of his royal titles.Buckingham Palace announced on Friday that the King’s brother would no longer be known as the Duke of Edinburgh amid the ongoing controversy about his private life. The royal family is bracing itself for fresh revelations this week as the posthumous memoir of Virginia Giuffre – who accused Prince Andrew of having sex with her when she was a teenager – is published. The prince has always denied her allegations, but is now facing a Metropolitan Police probe into claims he passed Giuffre’s personal details to his taxpayer-funded bodyguard in 2011 and asked him to investigate her.Although he has given up his titles voluntarily, he technically still holds them as it would take an Act of Parliament for him to officially lose them.York MP Rachel Maskell, who is currently suspended by the Labour Party, introduced a private members’ bill in 2022 that would give the monarch powers to remove titles. She told Radio 4’s Today programme: “It’s a single clause bill which I’m proposing, so it wouldn’t take up time, but it would make a real difference should these occurrences arise.“I really do trust that parliament will take this seriously and recognise there are opportunities here to address the wrongs of history and to ensure that the voices of victims and survivors are really heard and acted upon.”SNP Westminster leader Stephen Flynntold the Telegraph: “The family of Virgina Giuffre, whose life was destroyed, are angry and aghast, the public across these isles are angry and aghast, and they both deserve to know that some MPs share their outrage.“So I won’t sit silent – if an Act of Parliament is required to strip the likes of Peter Mandelson and Prince Andrew of their titles, then there can be no justification from this Labour government as to why that is not immediately happening.”Any legislation brought forward would need the support of Labour ministers in order to pass, but education secretary Bridget Phillipson said the “long-standing convention” was that the government does not involve itself in matters concerning the royal family.“The royal family don’t involve themselves in the business of government in terms of inserting themselves into the discussion and it’s right that we respect that going the other way as well,” she said.
