People Are Just Realising How Much Sunscreen We Should Actually Use, And Wow
Sunscreen on my handI consider myself pretty diligent about sunscreen.I wear it every day, even when it’s grey outside – I don’t substitute proper suncream for supposedly sun-blocking makeup, which dermatologists advise against, and I use a surely overqualified SPF 70. But according to a recent Instagram Reel from Dr Neal Rimmer, a senior scientific adviser for consumer advocacy publication Which?, I’m still doing it wrong (sigh). Sharing his five tips for using sunscreen properly, the expert said: “I would never scrimp on the amount of suncream I need to apply.” How much do we really need?Per the pro, “The amount you need for the whole body is essentially seven teaspoons worth; one for the face, head and neck, each arm and leg, and one for your front and your back.” That amounts to 35ml overall, Dr Rimmer continued – or, in slightly more terrifying terms, “almost a fifth of a standard 200ml bottle.” In case you think the doctor is just a little over-cautious, he’s far from alone. The NHS shared that most of us don’t use enough sunscreen. “As a guide, adults should aim to apply around six to eight teaspoons of sunscreen if you’re covering your entire body,” they revealed on their site. If your sunscreen isn’t layered on thick enough, its effectiveness is reduced. This is a problem because, as the NHS stated, “Sunburn increases your risk of skin cancer.” There is, they add, “no healthy way to get a tan.” View this post on InstagramA post shared by Which?
