Putin And Xi Embrace Trump's 'True Friend' Modi In Humiliating Twist For US
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, right, walks with Russian President Vladimir Putin during the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit at the Meijiang Convention and Exhibition Center in Tianjin, China, Monday.Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping put on a very cosy display with India’s Narendra Modi in recent days.Their blossoming friendship will be a blow to Donald Trump, because India’s premier once said the president was a “true friend”.But that all changed when the US imposed two rounds of tariffs on India earlier this month. The initial 25% tariff on Indian exports were part of Trump’s ‘Liberation Day’, while the latter round was meant to punish Modi for still buying Russia’s cheap oil exports despite the war in Ukraine.Trump has reportedly tried to speak to Modi on multiple occasions since then to seek a compromise, but the Indian leader has ignored the calls. Then, over the weekend, the Indian prime minister was seen walking – quite literally – hand in hand with the Russian president on his way to meet Xi in the Chinese city of Tianjin. Not only does this undermine Trump’s only significant effort to rein in Putin’s war – even if it was indirect – it also shows that he pushed his onetime ally towards China, one of his main adversaries.China and India are the biggest buyers of Russia’s crude oil and this summit was a clear sign that this trade is not going to stop any time soon – even if the profits fuel Putin’s aggression against Ukraine.During their talks, Modi said India and Russia stand side-by-side even in difficult times, while Putin then called Modi his “dear friend”, and gave him a lift in his armoured limo.Putin told him: “Russia and India have maintained special relations for decades, friendly and trusting. This is the foundation for the development of our relations in the future.”The support of both Xi and Modi will give Putin a boost too, as he was left pretty isolated on the world stage after his land grab in Ukraine.Bizarrely, Putin also used the summit to praise the UN Charter for being “true and unshakable to this day” – despite actually violating them himself with his invasion of Ukraine. He even outlined its key principles: the supremacy of international law, a nation’s right to self-determination and sovereign equality, non-interference in domestic affairs, respect for any country’s independence and national interests. There is an international arrest warrant out for Putin over his alleged abduction of Ukrainian children over the last three years. He also currently holds approximately 20% of Ukraine’s sovereign land and has been accused of trying to impose “Russification” in any occupied territories. That means his forces push Russian language and culture on the local Ukrainian communities in a bid to wipe out their own culture.Related...Russia Just Admitted Exactly What Everyone – But Trump – Already Knew About Putin's Ukraine Plans'We Are Out Of Time': Trump Sent A Bleak Reality Check After Putin's Deadly Kyiv AttackTrump’s White House Is ‘Bothsidesing' Putin’s Bloody Attacks On Ukraine
