Rachel Zegler Reveals How She Really Feels About 'Alarming' Snow White Drama
Rachel Zegler in character as Snow WhiteRachel Zegler is reflecting on the very public drama that she became embroiled in earlier this year thanks to her appearance in Disney’s live-action remake of Snow White. The Golden Globe winner played the lead in the new adaptation of Snow White, alongside a cast that included Gal Gadot as the Wicked Queen and Andrew Burnap as a new character created specifically for the remake. It’s fair to say that the release of Snow White was a troubled one, for a number of reasons.Rachel’s casting as the Disney princess was immediately met with a racist backlash from certain right-wing critics due to her Latin American heritage, and she later faced scrutiny for disparaging comments she made about the original animated film’s feminist credentials.Snow White faced further controversy due to the casting of Israeli actor Gal Gadot amid the conflict in the Middle East, while Rachel has made her own solidarity with the Palestinian cause clear, including when she first shared the trailer for the film on X, followed immediately by a post calling for a “free Palestine”.Rachel Zegler pictured at the premiere of Snow White in March 2025After the film received a lukewarm response from critics and underperformed at the box office (it’s reported to have made a loss of around $115 million, or £85 million, for Disney), an article published in Variety claimed that producer Marc Platt had flown across America to meet with Rachel in New York to discuss her social media activity. This story later appeared to be corroborated by Marc’s son, Jonah, in a now-deleted social media post blaming the former West Side Story star for the film’s lack of success.Rachel shared her take in a new interview with i-D magazine, claiming she found the backlash “really alarming”.“My fucking psychiatrist has seen me through all of it,” she claimed, noting that she needed to be reminded: “What you’re going through isn’t normal.”“That sentence did such wonders for me in multiple situations in my life,” Rachel added, noting that beginning to take anxiety medication was “truly a game changer” for her.Prior to that, she recalled, she “just wasn’t functioning”, saying: “I wanted to function in a way that made me feel confident in the way I was moving through the world.”“I think a victim mindset is a choice, and I don’t choose it,” she concluded. “I also don’t choose nastiness in the face of it. I don’t choose negativity in the face of it. I choose positivity and light and happiness.“And I do believe at times, happiness is absolutely a choice, and every day I wake up and I think I’m very lucky to live the life I live.”View this post on InstagramA post shared by i-D (@i_d)Elsewhere in her i-D interview, Rachel reiterated her support for Palestine, stating: “There are obviously things that are at stake by being outspoken, but nothing is worth innocent lives. My heart doesn’t have a fence around it, and if that is considered my downfall? There are worse things.”It’s been a busy 12 months for Rachel, who has racked up a number of credits both on stage and screen. Before Snow White, she had been treading the boards with Heartstopper’s Kit Connor in a Broadway production of Romeo And Juliet, featuring new music by producer Jack Antonoff.Since then, she’s crossed the Atlantic, and is currently starring in a new production of Evita helmed by Jamie Lloyd.Jamie previously oversaw the reimagined version of another classic Andrew Lloyd Webber musical, Sunset Boulevard, which earned Nicole Scherzinger both an Olivier and Tony win for her performance.Read Rachel Zegler’s full interview in i-D magazine.MORE FILM NEWS:‘People Are Going To See Something They've Never Seen Before’: How Pixar’s Next Hit Film Was MadePirates Of The Caribbean Producer Teases Return Of Classic Characters In Much-Hyped RebootLilo & Stitch Remake Director Addresses Backlash Over The New Film's Changed Ending
