Robert Jenrick Clashes With LBC Presenter After Being Reminded Of His Own 'Unlawful' Behaviour
Lewis Goodall and Robert Jenrick clashed on LBC.Robert Jenrick clashed with a radio presenter live on-air after being reminded of his own “unlawful” behaviour in the past. The shadow justice secretary was grilled by Lewis Goodall just days after posting a video showing him confronting fare-dodgers on the London Underground. But on LBC on Sunday, Goodall drew a connection between that and Jenrick admitting to “unlawfully” approving a planning application by Tory donor Richard Desmond in 2020.The £1bn project on the former Westferry Printworks site on London’s Isle of Dogs was given a last-minute reprieve by Jenrick after the local council and then the independent Planning Inspectorate both said it should be refused. The then housing secretary’s decision came a day before Tower Hamlets Council approved a new rate for its Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) – a move that would have increased Desmond’s financial liability to the local authority by between £30m and £50m.It emerged that Jenrick had sat next to Desmond at a Tory fundraiser, but he has always insisted that had nothing to do with his decision. On LBC, Goodall asked him: “Has anyone ever accosted you in the street for unlawfully approving a Conservative-supporting billionaire housing project which could have cost the taxpayer £45 million? Rule-breaking is a problem wherever it happens, isn’t it?”Jenrick replied: “You’re talking about something that happened five years ago which I was cleared of then. What matters now to people listening to your programme is how we tackle crime.”Goodall then said: “You don’t think rule-breaking is a problem for those at the top, it’s only a problem for those at the bottom.”But Jenrick told him: “No, you said that. I never said that.”The presenter went on: “That is the logical corollary of what you’re saying. Because it happened years ago it doesn’t matter.”The Tory MP hit back: “I want to ensure that we are properly tackling crime in our country. You seem to be more interested in deflecting and talking about other stuff.”But Goddall continued: “You don’t think there’s a connection between people seeing rule-breaking at the top, for example what happened with Boris Johnson during lockdown, and indeed with what you did acting unlawfully with Desmond, and then going ‘you know what, I don’t think I’ll act within the rules because they don’t at the top’. You don’t think there’s any connection between those things?”Jenrick replied: “I don’t condone anything, but what I’m saying is the public are much more interested in what’s happening right now in our country.”'So rule-breaking only matters at the bottom?''You accepted that you acted unlawfully.'@lewis_goodall points out that Robert Jenrick's campaign against fare-dodging could show a double standard, especially after his own legal troubles. pic.twitter.com/G6pn8SC2wz— LBC (@LBC) June 1, 2025Related...Sky News Presenter Compares Robert Jenrick To Hollywood Star Over Fare-Dodgers VideoRobert Jenrick Accused Of 'Playing Hero' By Tackling Fare-Dodgers On The TubeRobert Jenrick Suggests Nigel Farage Is On Drugs For Wanting To Scrap Two-Child Benefit Cap
