Robert Redford, Oscar-Winning Screen Legend, Dies Aged 89

Robert Redford at the premiere of his film The Old Man and the Gun in 2018Screen legend Robert Redford has died at the age of 89.On Tuesday, Redford’s publicist confirmed that the Academy Award winner had died at his home at Sundance in the mountains of Utah — the place he loved, surrounded by those he loved”.A cause of death has not been provided.Redford’s career spanned seven decades, beginning in the 1960s, when he landed small roles in projects like The Twilight Zone and Alfred Hitchcock Presents.Towards the end of the decade, he landed a role opposite Jane Fonda in Barefoot In The Park, he saw a boost in his popularity, appearing in movies like Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid and The Candidate.By the end of the 70s, he was one of Hollywood’s most famous leading men, thanks to his performances in All The President’s Men, The Way We Were, The Sting and The Great Gatsby.Interestingly, he was only nominated for an Oscar as an actor once in his career, for The Sting, eventually triumphing in the Best Director category in 1980 for Ordinary People, which marked his first feature film behind the camera.Robert Redford with his Oscar in 1981Over the course of his career, he also won three Golden Globes, including the coveted Cecil B DeMille Award for “outstanding contribution to the world of entertainment”, as well as receiving three Emmy nominations.Towards the end of his career, Redford was more discerning with the roles he agreed to take on.His more recent acting credits included Indecent Proposal, Disney’s remake of Pete’s Dragon, several Marvel movies (in which he appeared as Alexander Pierce) and The Old Man & The Gun, which he said at the time would be his final on-screen role.In addition to his work both in front of and behind the camera, Redford founded the Sundance institute, which has organised the film festival of the same name for the last 47 years.Redford was married twice in his life, first to the historian and activist Lola Van Wagenen and later to the German artist Sibylle Szaggars.He and his first wife had four children. Their first son, Scott, died of sudden infant death syndrome when he was just over two months old.The couple later had three more children, Shauna, David and Amy. Redford also had seven grandchildren.
