'She's Done Nothing Wrong': LBC Presenter Roasts Richard Holden Over Angela Rayner Row
Ben Kentish quizzed Richard Holden on LBC.A senior Tory was roasted on live radio after suggesting Angela Rayner was guilty of “hypocrisy” for buying a second home. The deputy prime minister has faced criticism from the Conservatives after it emerged she paid more than £700,000 for the property near Brighton. She also owns a house in Ashton-under-Lyne in her constituency, and has use of the grace-and-favour Admiralty House in Whitehall thanks to her senior role in the cabinet. On LBC this morning, shadow transport secretary Richard Holden struggled to explain precisely what the Tories believe Rayner has done wrong.Presenter Ben Kentish said: “A lot of your colleagues are very critical of Angela Rayner after it emerged that she, working class, had done well for herself and has bought a nice seafront home down in Brighton. What is it that you think she’s done wrong?”Holden said: “I’ve got no issue with her doing well for herself at all. I think there are questions around hypocrisy at the moment, when she’s changing some of the tax measures around second home ownership and questions as to where she is delineating as her primary residence.”But Kentish then asked him: “Why is it hypocritical to say second home owners should pay more tax, I am now one and I will pay more tax?”Holden repeated that there were “some questions over what has been designated her primary residence”, but the presenter told him “that’s completely separate from this story”.Kentish added: “Ultimately, she’s done nothing wrong, has she? This is an absolute row about nothing. Do you think she’s guilty of any wrongdoing?”The Tory frontbencher admitted: “I have no idea. It’s quite clear there are questions to ask. When you’ve got multiple properties, what is your primary designation?“These are perfectly reasonable questions that she should answer.”The presenter then hit back: “Did you ask the same questions about [former Tory chancellor] Jeremy Hunt and his reported nine properties?”But Holden said: “These are changes that Angela Rayner is putting through, these aren’t changes that the Conservatives put through.“This isn’t a question of hypocrisy around anything to do with what Conservative politicians suggested, these are questions around Angela Rayner and changes to the tax system that she’s proposing.”A source close to Rayner told HuffPost UK: “Angela’s work means she’s often had to be in and around London for over a decade now, but had always rented a flat for that purpose.”Related...Angela Rayner Has Managed To Trigger The Tories By Buying A HouseVictoria Derbyshire Trolls Richard Holden Over Business Support For UK-EU Deal: 'Are They All Wrong?'Richard Holden Calls Minister 'Insane' During Extraordinary TV Clash
