Superman Reviews: Critics Have A Lot Of Strong Feelings About James Gunn's New Movie

David Corenswet in the new Superman movieThe reviews are out for the new Superman movie, which serves as Guardians Of The Galaxy director James Gunn’s first attempt at completely rebooting the DC Comics cinematic “universe”.Critics have near-unanimously picked up on a few key details from the film – namely that the story in the new Superman hero doesn’t spend much time establishing the character. Instead, when we meet him, the world is already well-acquainted with the titular hero, whose alter-ego Clark Kent is already dating Lois Lane, who is well aware of his other identity.Similarly, the reviews all mention just how ambitious James Gunn’s new movie is, cramming in fight sequences, humour, political allegory and a very cute dog, seemingly switching tone from minute to minute. What the critics are less in agreement over, however, is how effective the film actually is.Although Superman has acquired a “fresh” early critical score of 86% on the review aggregation site Rotten Tomatoes, it’s worth pointing out that many of the reviews published seem less convinced with the new superhero outing, which casts David Corenswet as the Man Of Steel.Check out a selection of the reviews for yourself below…The Guardian (2/5) “How many more superhero films in general, and Superman films in particular, do we need to see that all end with the same spectacular faux-apocalypse in the big city with CGI skyscrapers collapsing? They were fun at first … but the thrill is gone.”BBC Culture (3/5) “Bursting with the geeky weirdness that defined Gunn’s earlier DC film, The Suicide Squad, not to mention the low-budget horror comedies he made before he turned his attention to superheroes, Superman is a curio that he appears to have made for his own amusement. Whether it will amuse cinema-goers at large remains to be seen.”The Telegraph (4/5) “The film arguably risks overloading itself with a tier of secondary heroes who call themselves the Justice Gang, though these are wisely treated as comedic cameos rather than feature-length spin-offs in waiting, each one doing their bit before slinking back into the wings.“Indeed, in a genre infamous for feints and teases, Gunn’s kitchen-sink approach feels refreshingly generous, and his excitement for the character shines through.”Variety“The super-busy quality of Superman works for it and, at times, against it [...] Gunn constructs an intricate game of a superhero saga that’s arresting and touching, and occasionally exhausting, in equal measure.”The Times (2/5) “Superman has indeed returned in a maximalist migraine of a movie, directed and written by the Guardians Of The Galaxy veteran James Gunn, a filmmaker also charged here with launching a new ‘universe’ of DC-sourced movie adventures. Good luck with that. Gunn approaches the nerdosphere’s most celebrated property like a giddy amnesiac who has missed the precipitous rise and fall of multi-character Marvel superhero movies and is instead stuck somewhere in the early 2010s.”Empire (2/5) “David Corenswet takes on the blue-and-red mantle admirably, and glimpses of Gunn’s signature sense of fun shine through – but a lack of humanity, originality and cohesion means the movie around them just doesn’t work.”The Hollywood Reporter“Gunn’s screenplay can certainly be faulted for piling on too many elements, making it at times seem lumpy and overstuffed. But what matters most is that the movie is fun, pacy and enjoyable, a breath of fresh air sweetened by a deep affection for the material and boosted by a winning trio of leads.”LA Times“As [James Gunn] cuts from a slow-burning gag about a garage door opener to a legitimately brutal execution to a whizbang combat scene set to a song that whoops, ‘Fun fun fun!’, I just wished I was having more of it. This isn’t quite the heart-soaring Superman I wanted. But these adventures wise him up enough that I’m curious to explore where the saga takes him next.”Time Out (3/5) “For Gunn, who has injected superhero movies with a winningly irreverence since his R-rated indie Super, ridding the DCEU of its bombast and self-seriousness is a step in right direction. Whether, like his alien hero, he can arrest the march of time and reinvigorate this tired genre is another matter.”Vulture“There’s a lot about how we complicate and obfuscate what should be obvious goods, such as saving the lives of children. But the film’s approach isn’t ham-fisted, and it makes room for gleefully fun stuff, too.”Superman hits cinemas on Friday 11 July.READ MORE:Superman Director Addresses Right-Wing Backlash After Claims The Character Is An ImmigrantThis Wild Scene Was Removed From The New Superman Film After Controversy During Test ScreeningWho Is Superman's New Star David Corenswet And Where Have You Seen Him Before?
