The Greens Now Have More Members Than The Tories As Support Surges

Green leader Zack Polanski delivers his speech at the party's conference in Bournemouth earlier this month.The Greens have more members than the Conservatives for the first time ever following a dramatic surge in support under their new leader.Another 1,000 people signed up this morning alone as Zack Polanski appeared on the BBC’s Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg programme.The party now has more than 126,000 members, compared to the 123,000 the Tories were said to have back in July.Polanski said the trend shows “British politics is changing and support for old-style parties built on privilege and power is shrinking”.“Increasing numbers of people are walking away from the politics of austerity, inequality and division and choosing a new kind of politics that offers a bold, hopeful vision of prosperity, equality and unity,” he said.“Our membership boom reflects growing public frustration with the political status quo and a hunger for genuine alternatives.”He added: “This milestone shows that people are ready for something new. The old two-party system is broken.“The Green Party is growing because we speak to the real challenges of this moment, and it’s clear that with our message, people can see that politics can be a force for good.”HuffPost UK revealed last week that the Greens planned to overtake the Tories and then set their sights on replacing Labour as a left-wing alternative to Reform UK.On Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg, Polanski said a Green government would seek to eventually take the UK out of NATO and instead form a military alliance with the European Union.A Labour spokesperson said that was “exactly what Putin wants to hear”. “Between the Greens wanting us to abandon NATO, and Nigel Farage desperately trying to re-write history when it comes to his admiration for Putin, it’s clear the opposition parties aren’t capable of standing up for our national security,” he said.Labour’s commitment to NATO is unshakeable - and our Labour government will always put the defence of our nation first to keep the British people safe.” Related...Exclusive: Greens Plan To 'Overtake Tories And Replace Labour' As Support SurgesRevolt On The Left?
