'The Opposite Of Peace': Putin Launches Air Strikes On Ukraine During Trump-Zelenskyy Talks

Russian President Vladimir Putin attends a meeting with acting governor of the Rostov region Yuri Slyusar at the Kremlin in Moscow, Russia, Monday, Aug. 18, 2025.Russia launched hundreds of drones and missiles at targets in Ukraine at the same time as Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Vladimir Putin were holding talks aimed at ending the war.The presidents discussed proposals aimed at delivering a peace deal more than three years after Putin ordered his troops to invade their neighbour.European leaders, including Keir Starmer, also took part in round-table talks aimed at bringing about an end to the conflict.But Andrii Sybiha, Ukraine’s foreign minister, revealed that at the same time, Russia was continuing its brutal bombardment of his country.That is despite Putin attending a summit titled “Pursuing Peace” with Trump in Alaska last Friday.Posting on X, Sybiha said: “While hard work to advance peace was underway in Washington DC, led by Presidents [Zelenskyy and Trump], with the participation of European and Nato leaders, Moscow continued to do the opposite of peace: more strikes and destruction.“Overnight, Russia launched 270 drones, as well as ballistic and cruise missiles, into Ukraine. There has been damage to the energy infrastructure and injured civilians.“This once again demonstrates how critical it is to end the killing, achieve a lasting peace, and ensure robust security guarantees.” While hard work to advance peace was underway in Washington, D.C., led by Presidents @ZelenskyyUA and @POTUS, with the participation of European and NATO leaders, Moscow continued to do the opposite of peace: more strikes and destruction.Overnight, Russia launched 270 drones,… pic.twitter.com/JMiFNRV9N1— Andrii Sybiha 🇺🇦 (@andrii_sybiha) August 19, 2025According to Reuters, Russia struck the central Ukrainian city of Kremenchuk as well as other locations across the country.It was the largest Russian attack so far in August, the Ukrainian air force said.In all, Russia launched 270 drones and 10 missiles during the bombardment, damaging energy infrastructure and leaving nearly 1,500 households without electricity.“Once again, the world has seen that Putin does not want peace — he wants to destroy Ukraine,” Kremenchuk mayor Vitalii Maletskyi said.The attacks came just 24 hours after after Russian air strikes killed 10 Ukrainians, including a one-year-old girl.That prompted Starmer’s spokesman to say: “President Putin has the choice to roll back his tanks and stop the bloodshed.
