Tom Holland Just Made A Very Surprising Admission About His Iconic Umbrella Performance
Tom HollandWhile most of the world knows Tom Holland best for his leading performance in the Spider-Man movies, to a select few, he’ll always be the world’s top Rihanna impersonator.Back in 2017, Tom and Zendaya, his Spider-Man co-star and fiancée, made an appearance on the celebrity competition show Lip Sync Battle, in which pairs of famous contestants go head-to-head while miming along to a variety of different records. The show’s biggest cultural footprint undoubtedly came when Tom surprised the world with a rendition of Rihanna’s Umbrella. While his performance – which has now been viewed 11 million times on YouTube alone – began with an homage to Gene Kelly’s Singin’ In The Rain, Tom then underwent a quick change to perform Umbrella, complete with a bob wig, patent leather short shorts, fishnet tights and the original choreography from Rihanna’s iconic music video.Reflecting on his big number during a recent interview on Gordon Ramsay’s YouTube channel, the British actor admitted that the performance was only supposed to be to Singin’ In The Rain, but things snowballed when someone had the idea to incorporate Umbrella.“When I was working with the creative team coming up with the ideas, they kind of pitched this Umbrella thing,” he explained. “And as we were rehearsing, it got crazier and crazier.” he explained“Then the rain machine came in, and then I was like, ‘Fuck it, I want to wear fishnets and do this’, and ‘I want a wig and a quick-change’.”Asked whose the fishnets were originally, Tom quipped: “They were my granny’s, actually.”Tom Holland as Rihanna on Lip Sync BattleHe also revealed that his dad, comedian Dominic Holland, was initially against Tom doing the Lip Sync Battle routine at all.“When I told my dad, he was like, ‘Son, I don’t think that’s a good idea. I don’t think you should do that’,” Tom recalled.“At that time in my career, he was very worried about me becoming too famous too quickly. So, he was really keen for me to not do extra TV shows that I didn’t have to do, to try and maintain that part of my childhood.”Before the world was introduced to Tom for his Marvel performances, he actually got his start in musical theatre in London’s West End, appearing as the title character in Billy Elliott. In 2021, it was revealed he’d be showing off his moves once again in a new biopic based on the life of Fred Astaire, though the project is yet to enter production.READ MORE:Tom Holland Breaks Silence On James Bond Rumours With Intriguing Comments'A Lot Of Arguing': Tom Holland Opens Up About How 'Animosity' On Set Of This Project Affected HimTom Holland Opens Up About Zendaya 'Date Night' And It's A Lot Less Romantic Than You'd Hope
