Tories Accused Of 'Dystopian' Attack On Trans Community
Campaigners take part in a rally organised by trans rights groups, trade unions, and community organisations following the Supreme Court ruling on the definition of a woman in equalities law.The Tories have been accused of launching a “dystopian” attack on the trans community by proposing changes to the way personal information is collected by the state.Shadow technology minister Ben Spencer has tabled an amendment to the government’s Data (Use and Access) Bill which would force public bodies to collect data based on someone’s sex at birth rather than their gender identity. That would mean organisations like the NHS effectively having to ignore gender recognition certificates – the documentation which allows trans people to update their legal gender on personal documents. The Tory move comes after the UK’s Supreme Court already ruled that a woman is defined by biology, not gender, in a major blow to the trans community.Labour’s huge Commons majority means the Tory amendment is virtually guaranteed to be rejected.Urging MPs to vote against it, Labour backbencher Clive Lewis told HuffPost UK: “If the state can override your legal identity, record you as something you are not, and share that across every public system—then no one’s rights are safe.“This isn’t data accuracy; it’s institutionalised erasure and it has a very dark, authoritarian dystopia klaxon attached to it. Anyone remotely interested in living in a free, fair and tolerant society should oppose this.”Similarly, Green Party MP Sian Berry told HuffPost UK: “Trans rights need to be defended by everyone right now, especially those with the power to make new laws. “This deeply disturbing amendment would be a gross violation of trans people’s right to privacy, risking a mass outing of trans people across the UK. If passed, it would dangerously increase the risk of harassment and abuse already faced by this minority community.“I’m pleased that the government opposed this amendment in the Bill’s committee stage, and I am hopeful it will do the same again tomorrow.”It comes after a review into gender data collection in Britain suggested acknowledging Gender Recognition Certificates had triggered a “widespread loss of data on sex”.Related...Paapa Essiedu Raises Eyebrows By Calling For Trans Support After Joining Harry Potter SeriesLesbians Have Always Stood With Trans Women – Our Safe Spaces Should TooLabour MP Leaves Former Tory Minister Speechless By Pointing Out Obvious Fact About Trans Ruling
