Trump Makes The Kind Of Embarrassing Gaffe Which Would Have Haunted Biden

President Donald Trump speaks with reporters in the James Brady Press Briefing Room at the White House, Monday, Aug. 11, 2025, in Washington, as Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth looks on.Donald Trump just made a very unfortunate verbal blunder as he appeared to forget just where Alaska is in the middle of his own press conference.The US president was meant to be announcing a crackdown on crime in Washington DC, but, in his usual manner, went off on a tangent and started talking about his face-to-face meeting with Vladimir Putin this Friday.Trump chose to invite the authoritarian Russian leader to meet him in the American state of Alaska this week for peace talks meant to help end the Ukraine war.Even though it is meant to be a pivotal moment for the conflict, Trump seemed to forget where he’s going altogether today.He said: “It’s embarrassing for me to be up here – I’m going to see Putin, I’m going to Russia on Friday – being up here, talking about how unsafe, how dirty and disgusting this once-beautiful capital was.”Trump did not seem to notice his major geographical mistake.That’s the kind of error he and the rest of the Republican Party used to criticise Joe Biden for during his own term in office.For instance, the former president once confused Switzerland with Sweden and got muddled about which ocean was which when trying to talk about building a railway across sub-Saharan Africa.So Trump often did exaggerated impressions of a supposedly confused Biden during his rallies and has called his predecessor “stupid” or a “low-IQ individual”.But this slip-up with Alaska is particularly painful, as the US state used to be part of Russia up until the 19th century, when it was sold to America.By inviting Vladimir Putin to meet him there, Trump already gave the right-wing politicians who want Russia to reclaim the land a boost.By accidentally mistaking Alaska for part of Russia, he will almost certainly have pleased parts of the Kremlin.Trump: "It's embarrassing for me to be up here.
