Wednesday Season 2 Star Joanna Lumley Reveals Tim Burton's Surprising Advice About Her Accent
Joanna Lumley in the new season of WednesdayJoanna Lumley may be renowned as a British national treasure, but director Tim Burton had some very direct advice when it came to her accent in the long-awaited new season of Wednesday. The Absolutely Fabulous star is among a stacked cast of new additions to the second season of the Netflix mega-hit led by Jenna Ortega, with fellow newbies including Billie Piper, Thandiwe Newton and Steve Buscemi. The Bafta winner plays Morticia Addams’ mother Grandmama Hester Frump in the new episodes, who is “armed with a razor-sharp tongue”, according to Netflix’s Tudum. But it sounds like we can expect a rather interesting accent from Joanna’s character than we’re used to when Wednesday returns on Netflix next week.Joanna Lumley in the This Morning studioSpeaking, fittingly, on Wednesday’s edition of This Morning, Joanna explained how exactly she landed on the unique voice for her character, which sounds like a throwback to an old-fashioned mid-Atlantic accent.Joanna recalled being on set with Catherine Zeta-Jones, when she realised she’d not quite cracked her character’s identity, asking her on-screen daughter: “Do you know who I am? Where have I come from?” With the Oscar winner equally as puzzled, the Fool Me Once star went on to say that there had been some confusion about whether or not her character was English, before asking the director himself.“I know we’re shooting in 20 minutes…” she recalled telling the Beetlejuice director. “But could you just say… what am I? Am I sort of English?”His response was simply: “Oh, just not too British.”View this post on InstagramA post shared by This Morning (@thismorning)With that advice in mind, Joanna based her voice on all the “ancient movie stars who had quite Englishly accents in the olden days”, adding that Grandmama has “been around the world a million times”, so it’s blended with other accents somewhat over the years. She also instructed her co-star Jenna to “stop” if she said anything wrong.Wednesday marks a reunion for Joanna Lumley and Tim Burton, who previously collaborated on the films James And The Giant Peach and Corpse Bride. Last week, Netflix officially announced that Wednesday was getting a third season, and even a potential spinoff. As revealed in a joint interview with star Jenna and director/producer Tim in The Hollywood Reporter, showrunner Alfred Gough said a secretive spinoff is “something we’re definitely noodling” and that “there are other characters we can look at”.Part one of Wednesday season two is set to drop on 6 August, with the second half arriving on 3 September.READ MORE:Netflix Announces Major Wednesday Update – And 1 Exciting Hint About It’s FutureJenna Ortega Teases One Major Change Coming To Wednesday Season 2Jenna Ortega Reveals Surprising Truth Behind That Viral Wednesday Dance Scene
