Winona Ryder at the premiere of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice last yearFor most of us, the cult teen movie Heathers was the film that helped put Winona Ryder on the map, long before we knew her from the likes of Edward Scissorhands, Girl, Interrupted, Stranger Things and her Oscar-nominated stint in The Age Of Innocence.However, in a new interview with Elle UK, Winona admitted that not only was she “told I was never gonna work again” because of her appearance in the dark comedy, she did actually lose out on a major role after the film’s release.The US star explained that she had initially been cast in The Freshman, the crime comedy starring Matthew Broderick and acting legend Marlon Brando.However, when producers sat down to watch her in Heathers, she eventually lost out on the part.The cast of Heathers in 1985“They thought it was making fun of teen suicide,” Winona explained. “They were deeply offended and, yeah, they revoked the offer.“[I was] like, ‘I can’t work with Marlon Brando?’. But I had to stand my ground.
