Blow For Nigel Farage As Reform UK Fail To Win Key By-Election
Plaid Cymru's Lindsay Whittle celebrates winning the Caerphilly by-election.Nigel Farage has been dealt a major blow after Reform UK failed to win a crunch by-election.Welsh nationalists Plaid Cymru claimed a historic win in Caerphilly as Labour – who have dominated politics in the town for more than a century – were left humiliated.Reform had high hopes of winning the by-election for the Welsh Parliament seat, with Farage saying his party would “throw everything” at winning it.But the party’s candidate, Llyr Powell, came second behind Plaid Cymru’s  Lindsay Whittle, with Labour’s Richard Tunnicliffe coming a distant third.Whittle received 15,961 votes, more than 47% of the total, with Powell on 12,113. Tunnicliffe received only 3,713, down from 13,289 the last time the seat was contested in in 2021.Whittle said the result showed Labour was “a dying beast” after decades of political domination. The result is hugely significant given no party other than Labour has ever held the seat since the start of Welsh devolution in 1999.At Westminster, the seat has been in Labour’s hands since 1918 – apart from between 1981 and 1983, when the Labour MP Ednyfed Hudson Davies defected to the SDP.With the Welsh Senedd, Scottish Parliament and council seats across England all up for grabs next May, Labour’s crushing defeat will also set alarm bells ringing in Downing Street.A collapse in the party’s support in such a traditional stronghold will simply add to the growing belief among party bosses that they are heading for catastrophe next May.However, the fact that Reform UK could not win the seat will provide hope that tactical voting could halt the party’s progress. Related...Why A Welsh Parliament By-Election Could Signal A Seismic Shift In UK PoliticsLabour Minister Accuses Nigel Farage Of Spouting 'Kremlin Talking Points' In Brutal Commons Blast'His Numbers Don't Add Up': Jeremy Clarkson Launches Furious Attack On Nigel Farage
