Channel 4 Exec Defends Airing Controversial Bonnie Blue Documentary
Bonnie Blue is the subject of a new Channel 4 documentaryChannel 4’s chief commissioning officer Ian Katz has weighed in on some of the more controversial offerings that have aired on the UK broadcaster in the last year.During a discussion at the Edinburgh TV Festival on Wednesday, Ian shared his take on the reality show Virgin Island, a TV experiment in which 12 people travel to a specialised retreat to help them overcome issues around intimacy, as well as Bonnie Blue: 1,000 Men And Me, a documentary centring around the titular porn star and her much-hyped mission to break the record for the number of men she had sex with in a single day.Pointing out that both shows were “extremely successful” in terms of viewing figures, the exec insisted that Channel 4 is “not in the business of being shocking for shocking’s sake”, which he suggested would be “just attention-seeking behaviour”.“Both of those subjects are absolutely the kind of territory Channel 4 should be exploring,” he noted, claiming that Bonnie Blue is “if you like, ground zero of the porn culture” and Virgin Island explored “what the porn culture does to young people”.Channel 4 aired Bonnie Blue: 1,000 Men And Me last month, with some critics taking issue with the doc for not going more in-depth with its subject or asking her more detailed questions about her motivations.Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the channel previously defended the decision to include certain graphic sexual scenes in the one-off documentary, saying: “Careful consideration has been given to the content and the way in which it is included. The explicit content in the documentary is editorially justified and provides essential context; making pornographic content is Bonnie’s job, and this film is about her work and the response to it.“Crucially, the content is presented in a non-gratuitous manner and viewers will be alerted of the sexual content in a programme warning at the start to ensure they understand from the outset the nature of the programme.”MORE TV NEWS:Channel 4 Defends Inclusion Of 'Explicit' Scenes In New Bonnie Blue DocumentaryCritics Are Saying Suranne Jones' 'Captivating' Netflix Drama Is Your Next Binge-WatchSeverance Star Adam Scott Almost Quit Acting After Losing Out On This Iconic 2000s Role
