Trump's America Just Gave Putin Another Free Pass On The World Stage
President Donald Trump's officials refused to condemn Russia for its 2008 invasion of Georgia.Donald Trump’s administration has refused to condemn Russia over its war in Georgia for the first time in 17 years.Ever since Russian forces invaded Georgia in 2008 – the first conflict in Europe of the 21st century – the international community has come together to denounce Moscow’s actions every year on the anniversary of the war.Russia continues to have a military presence in two Georgian regions, Abkhazia and South Ossetia, to this day, claiming they are “independent”. On Thursday, the US notably chose not to sign a joint statement from the UN Security Council members in support of Georgia’s territorial integrity. The Russian newspaper Kommersant reported that five Security Council members – the UK, France, Denmark, Greece and Slovenia along with incoming member Latvia – all signed the document which compared the ongoing presence of Russian troops in parts of Georgia to Putin’s invasion of Ukraine. It criticised Russia’s “continuous provocations, violations of international law and militarisation” in the occupied parts of Georgia, and demanded Putin withdraws his troops. The statement read: “Russian invasion of Georgia in August of 2008 demonstrated the start of Russia’s more aggressive stance towards its neighbors. Russia has continued down this path with its unprovoked and unjustified aggression against Ukraine.”Russia’s representative to the UN, Dmitry Polyansky, criticised anyone who condemned the war, claiming: “Those who oppose this process are interested in turning Georgia into a pawn solely for their own geopolitical interests.”The US’s decision not to denounce Putin over Georgia echoes the White House’s refusal to sign a UN General Assembly resolution which named Russia as the aggressor in the Ukraine war earlier this year.At the time, Trump’s secretary of state Marco Rubio said the US opposed the resolution because it was “antagonistic to either side” and would hinder American efforts to negotiate a peace deal with Russia. The American decision not to condemn Russia over the Georgia war comes after Trump invited Putin to a bilateral meeting in Alaska. The US president had warned that there would be “severe consequences” if the Russian leader did not agree to end the war.But he failed to secure any concessions from Putin and instead ended up dropping his own demand for a ceasefire.Days later, even after hosting Volodymyr Zelenskyy and his European allies in the White House for further discussions about peace, Trump started once again repeating Kremlin propaganda and falsely blaming Ukraine for starting the war.Related...Trump Backtracks In Embarrassing Move After Meetings With Zelenskyy And PutinRock Star Calls Trump 'A Danger' To 'The Entire World' In Fiery Instagram PostTop Putin Ally Scorns Trump's 'Clumsy' Peace Talks With Ukraine And European Leaders
