I'm A Laundry Expert. This Is The Secret To Never Having To Iron School Uniform Again
I hate ironing. Life is extremely busy and between looking after two young kids, working, and trying to keep on top of mountains of washing (getting it cleaned, dried, put away in the right places), as well as the billion other bits of life admin that come with kids, once the day is over there are certain things I want to be doing in what little free time I have left. And wrestling with an ironing board isn’t one of them. That said, my child is now at school and wearing uniform which seems to be a wrinkle-magnet. So, what’s a parent to do?Thankfully AO’s laundry expert, Gwil Snook, has shared a clever hack (or five) that could mean parents never have to iron school uniforms again. How to avoid ironing uniformSnook is a firm believer in hanging uniforms up as soon as they come out of the washing machine – give them a good shake to smooth out the items before you place them on the hanger, he advised.“This will prevent stubborn creases from setting in,” he said. For added wrinkle prevention, look for a washing machine with an anti-crease program (fancy!). To keep creases at bay, he also recommends spritzing your child’s clothes with a wrinkle-releasing product (which you can make at home). “Add one part water to one part fabric softener to make your own. Mix well and spray lightly onto clothes to help relax the fabric so wrinkles simply drop out once you hang them up,” he said. Once the clothes have dried, he advised against storing them in overcrowded wardrobes – mainly because tightly packed clothing doesn’t have room to breathe and can lead to even more creases. And if you’re a devoted tumble dryer user, add a damp cloth to the last 10 minutes of the cycle, suggested Snook. “This softens the fabric and helps loosen any remaining wrinkles. Another trick is to toss in a [clean] tennis ball, which helps clothes dry faster and reduces wrinkling by moving air around the dryer.”Huh!Lastly, if there’s a particularly stubborn crease, grab a handheld steamer (they’re so much quicker and easier to use than irons) and go at it – or hang the items in the bathroom while taking a hot shower, suggested the laundry pro, who noted: “The steam will help release the wrinkles.”Happy non-ironing! Related...Savings Expert's 2-Word Tip For Buying Cheaper School UniformThis Is How The Cost Of School Uniforms Is Impacting ParentsOh Good – School Uniforms Are WAY Dirtier Than The Average Toilet Seat
