Jade Thirlwall Takes Aim At Matty Healy For Shying Away From Politics
Jade Thirlwall at the Ivor Novello Awards in MayJade Thirlwall has admitted she doesn’t like when fellow musicians shy away from political matters, rather than using their platforms as a force for good.In particular, the former Little Mix star has voiced how “disappointed” she was to hear The 1975 frontman Matty Healy say he would prefer to stay out of politics.Over the weekend, The Guardian published a wide-ranging interview with Jade, where she addressed Matty’s speech during The 1975’s headlining slot at Glastonbury, in which he told the crowd: “We don’t need more politics. We need more love and friendship.”The Angel Of My Dreams singer said: “I don’t think you can be a pop artist and cover your eyes. I saw Matty Healy say that he doesn’t want to be political, which I found disappointing.”She added: “It’s very easy for someone who’s white and straight and very privileged to say that. Good for you, hun!”HuffPost UK has contacted Matty Healy’s team for comment.Matty Healy on stage at Glastonbury in JuneEven in her Little Mix days, the band became known for speaking out in support of causes close to their hearts, supporting LGBTQ+ rights, gender equality and the Black Lives Matter movement.During her Guardian interview, Jade admitted she once “got in a bit of trouble” when she took it into her own hands to voice how “saddened and ashamed” she was by a 2015 vote in parliament in favour of an airstrike in Syria.Truly saddened and ashamed by the vote tonight. So, so sorry to the innocent people of Syria xxjadexx https://t.co/gdfskg2FgM— Little Mix (@LittleMix) December 3, 2015She recalled: “I felt very passionate about it. I’m no expert in politics but I’ve always taken an interest.“Around 9/11 I saw first‑hand the Islamophobia that my grandad experienced, and as someone of Arab heritage I’ve seen people turning a blind eye to the Middle Eastern tragedy.”Jade added: “What’s quite funny is that [the members of Little Mix] didn’t have individual Twitter accounts [at that time], and we each had to sign off tweets from the Little Mix account with our name. So I did my tweet about Syria and ended it with ‘xxJadexx’.”Meanwhile, during her own Glastonbury debut back in June, Jade performed her song FUFN (Fuck You For Now) and led the crowd in a “fuck you” chant aimed at everything from Reform, transphobia and “welfare cuts” to “justifying genocide” and “selling arms”.Jade’s long-awaited debut solo album That’s Showbiz, Baby! is released next month.READ MORE:Jade Reveals Puppet On A String Singer Sandie Shaw's Reaction To Being Sampled On Her SongJade Thirlwall Once Confronted Noel Gallagher About His Past Digs – But It Didn't Go So WellLola Young Sets The Record Straight After Her Reaction To Losing A Brit To Jade Goes Viral
