'Let Them Go And Have A Good Time': Trump Says MPs Should Not Be Recalled For His State Visit
Donald Trump and the then-Prince of Wales during the US president's first state visit to the UK in 2019.Donald Trump has said he does not want Parliament to be recalled so he can address MPs and peers during his state visit to the UK.The US president said MPs should “go and have a good time” rather than return to Westminster.Trump’s state visit – his second as president – will take place from September 17 to 19.That coincides with a Commons recess as MPs attend their party conferences.Government insiders confirmed yesterday that there were no plans to recall Parliament to allow Trump to make an address, an honour which has been bestowed on his predecessors Barack Obama, Bill Clinton and Ronald Reagan. In a surprise interview with BBC North America correspondent Gary O’Donoghue, Trump insisted he did not want Parliament to be recalled on his account. He said: “I think let them go and have a good time.”Elsewhere in the interview, Trump criticised the “sloppy” way in which Brexit had been implemented as he heaped praise on Keir Starmer. He said: ” I think it’s been on the sloppy side but I think it’s getting straightened out.“I really like the prime minister a lot, even though he’s a liberal. He did a good trade deal with us, which a lot of countries haven’t been able to do.”Trump also hailed America’s “great relationship” with the United Kingdom. He said: “One of the problems with Nato is we have to fight for them but will they actually fight for us if we had a war? I’m not sure.“But I will say this, I believe that the UK would fight for us. I really think the relationship is such a great one. I think that they would be with us, I’m not sure that a lot of the other countries would be.”Related...Donald Trumps Tells The BBC He Is 'Disappointed But Not Done' With Putin ...
