Monster Season 3: Charlie Hunnam Opens Up About How He Found Ed Gein's Voice
Charlie Hunnam as Ed Gein in the new latest season of MonsterCharlie Hunnam has opened up about the process of creating the voice for his character in the latest season of Netflix’s Monster. The Sons Of Anarchy plays Ed Gein in the latest iteration of the controversial true crime anthology series, which examines not just the serial killer and grave robber’s horrific and violent crimes, but also contemporary culture’s obsession with them.A major part of Charlie’s transformation into his murderous character was his voice, which he said took inspiration from some unlikely sources.Speaking to Variety before the series was released, the Newcastle-born actor said he and the show’s creative team knew going into the series that Gein’s “voice needed to be really specific”, even if none of them initially “had an idea of what that was”.Despite the odds apparently being stacked against him, the one-time Queer As Folk star managed to get his hands on recordings of Gein’s voice, which director Max Winkler said was inspired partly by Michael Jackson and Mark Rylance’s performance in the play Jerusalem. After convincing the producer of another project about Gein to give him access to a recording of a 70-minute with Gein, Charlie said he “started to see him through a series of affectations to please his mother”.“That’s where the voice came from,” he noted.Later in the interview, Charlie revealed that he stayed using the voice he’d created for Gein in between takes, but stopped short of staying in character at the end of the day as he “didn’t feel the need to carry the weight of him home”.“I wasn’t acutely aware of it being annoying to people,” he added of the decision to remain in Gein’s voice on set.Charlie insisted that he “didn’t stay in it in a way that was a labour”, instead, he claimed, he was “just having fun”.“I shouldn’t say having fun,” he then clarified. “I was enjoying the process.” A fourth season of Monster is already confirmed to be in the works, with Ella Beatty set to play the franchise’s first female protagonist in The Lizzie Borden Story.Earlier this week, Variety said that Charlie will be returning to the show as Borden’s father Andrew Borden.READ MORE:Will Monster Get A Season 4 After The Ed Gein Story?
