No.10 Condemns Israel Over Latest Killing Of Journalists In Gaza

This screen grab taken from AFPTV on August 11, 2025 shows Al-Jazeera's Anas al-Sharif, who was killed in a targeted air strike in Gaza.Downing Street has said it is “gravely concerned” about the killing of five journalists in Gaza by the Israel Defense Forces. The Al-Jazeera employees died following a targeted air strike near Gaza City’s al-Shifa Hospital on Sunday. They included Anas al-Sharif, one of the broadcaster’s most prominent journalists who has reported from Gaza throughout the war.Israel has claimed that he “served as the head of a terrorist cell in Hamas”, although it has provided no evidence to back up that accusations.According to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), a total of 186 reporters have been killed in Gaza since Israel began its offensive in the territory in October 2023.Responding to the killing of the five Al-Jazeera journalists, prime minister Keir Starmer’s official spokesman said: “We are gravely concerned by the repeated targeting of journalists in Gaza. ″We are very clear that reporters covering conflicts are afforded protection under international law. In Gaza, journalists must be able to report independently.”He said Israel’s claims about al-Sharif’s links to Hamas “should be investigated thoroughly and independently”.But he added: “Israel must ensure that journalists can report independently without fear.”Jodie Ginsberg, chief executive of the CPJ, told the BBC: “This is a pattern we’ve seen from Israel – not just in the current war, but in the decades preceding – in which typically a journalist will be killed by Israeli forces and then Israel will say after the fact that they are a terrorist, but provides very little evidence to back up those claims.”Mohamed Moawad, Al Jazeera’s managing editor, told the BBC that Sharif was an accredited journalist who was “the only voice” for the world to know what was happening in the Gaza Strip. He said: “They were targeted in their tent, they weren’t covering from the front line,” Moawad said of the Israeli strike.“The fact is that the Israeli government is wanting to silence the coverage of any channel of reporting from inside Gaza. This is something that I haven’t seen before in modern history.”Related...A US Ambassador Ranted About The UK After It Criticised Israel.
