Weapons Director Weighs In On The Meaning Behind That Floating Gun Scene

Weapons centres around the aftermath of the disappearance of 17 children from the same elementary school classThis article contains spoilers for Weapons. If there are moments from the hit horror movie Weapons that you’re still trying to wrap your head around, don’t worry, screenwriter and director Zach Cregger wasn’t really sure what it was all about, either.Weapons is set in a small-town community where every child but one from the same elementary school class woke up at 2.17am one morning, ran from their houses and vanished into the darkness. The film centres around the aftermath of the mysterious events, including the toll taken on one of the missing children’s fathers, Archer, played by Josh Brolin.Josh Brolin as Archer in WeaponsOne scene that really got people talking online is a dream sequence in which Archer leaves his house, runs outside and enters a mirror-image version of his family home, over which a massive assault rifle can be seen hovering, emblazoned with the number 2.17, the same time the town’s children disappeared. Many fans have been trying to make sense of the sequence (some critics think the film itself serves as an allegory for gun violence, specifically relating to school shootings), which Zach addressed during a recent interview with Variety. The time 2.17am is a recurring motif in WeaponsAsked what the moment means to him, the filmmaker admitted: “I don’t know. It’s a very important moment for me in this movie, and to be frank with you, I think what I love about it so much is that I don’t understand it.“I have a few different ideas of what it might be there for, but I don’t have the right answer. I like the idea that everyone is probably going to have their own kind of interaction or their own relationship with that scene, whether they don’t give a shit about it and it’s boring, or whether they think it’s some sort of political statement, or whether they think it’s just cool.”He added: “I don’t really care. It’s not up to me. I just like that it’s there.”Zach Cregger at the premiere of Weapons last monthElsewhere in the interview, Zach was asked if he’d consider revisiting the Weapons universe on a future project, to which he gave a rather intriguing answer.Weapons is in cinemas now.READ MORE:Could There Be A Weapons Sequel?
